Post up your stats to make sure all is well there. Also, are you connecting wirelessly from the ps3 to the router?

Also it could be at Sony's end, as PSN is a free service Sony may have decided to keep costs down and not have enough bandwidth during certain times.

It happened on Xbox Live one Xmas when the whole service was brought to it's knees for 2 weeks by the sheer volume of users.

A good test would be download on your PC a biggish file such as a Nvidea driver to see what your getting on a good site.

Also downloading the Dr Who games from the bbc website always maxed out my connection.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

Do you have the phase 1 white netgear router? If so, then try the following link and paste in the detailed stats (that's if it still works these days as I'm not sure):

In which case update your profile.
You've still failed to supply info regarding download speeds on your computer from good websites. Try to download something from nero for example and see what speed you get. Run a speed.io test and post the results.

Re: Downloading game updates very slow with 17mb speed

      Thanks, results as follows:

Results from speed.io - Internet DSL Speedtest
      (Copied on 2010-07-16 11:26:39)
      Download: 6298 Kbit/s
      Upload : 652 kbit/s
      Connects : 1772 conn/min
      Ping: 34 ms

downloading fron the likes of Nero is at a rate of between 200-230kbps.

any advice? why does it say 6.2mb if my line is 17mb?

      cheers

Re: Downloading game updates very slow with 17mb speed

Now it sounds like you have a lot of errors on your line slowing it down but just to be sure run a few more speed.io tests and verify that the speed remains around the same. If it does then try the router in the test socket and repeat the tests, if the problems disappear and the speed goes back up then you have some faulty internal wiring causing errors in which case your best option would be to get and fit a filtered faceplate (such as ADSLNations XTE-2005) and run your router off that. If the problems persist in the test socket then give sky a ring and have them cap your connection to 16mb which should allow your line to be less error prone.
