Sky router help & Homeplugs with PS3

I have a bog standard Sky router which has no named brand on it, its defintly not a netgear one and not sure how i can find out whos it is.

Anyway just a few questions about the above title.

I have a ps3 with serious lag most of the time, but seems to happen when someone else in the house is on a laptop, sometimes 2-3 laptops are running continuously while im on the ps3.

what i need to know if i get homeplugs, from what i understand one plugs in to the main socket with an ethernet in to the router and the other plug connects next to the ps3 via an ethernet cable, can the other laptops continue to surf wireless while the homeplugs are in use? also would this by any chance improve my connection?. On average the bar during MW2 is always on orange sometimes on yellow.

I recently changed the channel on the router to channel 13 which has slight improvement at times.

i have tried the speedtest.net website but do not understand what the heck it tells me.

      Some advice would be appreciated.

Also i am thinking of forking out a bit of money on a new netgear router but was wondering if homeplugs is a good option.

      thanks

Homeplugs are the best option and you can run them at the same time as wireless without any issues.

If someone else is using the connection at the same time as you are gaming, you will always be subject to some lag as there is extra traffic in and out so sharing with a couple of laptops is always going to cause problems when gaming.

Forget getting another router, the homeplug idea will give you a moch better connection than any wireless, it won't cure the problem with sharing the connection though, nothing will except your own dedicated connection (or turning off the other PC's)

Re: Sky router help & Homeplugs with PS3

      Hi,

I done a speed test and here is the results im getting, by the way using a sagem sky router

      Download - 0.32mb/s
      Upload - 0.64mb/s
      Ping - 88ms
      Server London - Distance 50mi

Not sure how that compares as average results most probably poor.

Just a few more questions regarding homeplugs.

do they effect the telephone line?

i dont have a normal socket near the playstation only an extension, will one work connected to an extension?

They won't affect the telephone at all and they can be used on an extension but it may be trial and error and depend on what else is connected to it. Mine work fine on a 4way with the PC/Printer and Monitor.

Post your router stats so we can check the connection, it seems a little slow.

You have very bad noise problems. Plug into your test socket, link below, and post your stats from there. Use only the cables supplied by Sky, no phone extensions.

Re: Sky router help & Homeplugs with PS3

I was using wireless then bought dome homeplugs but couldnt get them to work on the plug socket behind the tv, the ones in the hall worked !!!
I put it down to bad wiring.
I then got an 'n' adapter for my console and from my dgn2000 i can have a laptop running tvcatchup and get no lag on a 4mb connection.

I know homeplugs are better but for someonein my position, wireless is the way to go.
