when im hosting on call of duty games people get green bars just it keeps switching from 3 to 4 bars all the time also player seem to sponge alot on my connection when i host. i even went and a brought a wire but its still doing it. i was told you only need 5 meg down and 700 upload for everyone to get full ping but on the ps3 speed test its saying about 700 upload. also when im not hosting my connection is switching alot from 3 to 4 bars (yes on english host)

Re: hosting on call of duty unstable host

Hi there, not to be rude, I think your understanding of how ping works is a little off. Its all to do with distance, theres no getting around it. No matter how fast your connection is there is still going to be distances between you and other players which will result in a whole array of ping times. And its not entirely your connection which will decide how bad someones ping is, for example if you played a sky connect user, they're ping will be really bad anyway because of the broadband package that it is, and there are all sorts of bad gaming ISPs out there. Cough...sky..Cough!

Who ever said you only need these speeds, doesn't understand how it works, predominantly only people you play with in the UK or nearby france, holland etc will achieve full green bars. I hope this helps, no matter what you do you are going to be faced with them rainbow colored pings lol, until we have local search functionality built into games, Waw has it!

This is a rough approx guide to xbox live and ps3 color ping times, 4 green bars equals 1-120ms ping, 3 light green bars equals 121-200ms ping, 2 yellow bars equals 201-400ms ping, and the dreaded 1red dot is anything 401+ms ping

Oh and anything over 200ms is considered competitively not playable. That is just to much for FPS games

You have not got a very high speed for your attenuation, I would recommend that you try the test socket to see if there is improvement in the noise margin and speed and if there is to get yourself a filtered faceplate as you should be seeing aleast 16Mb to 18Mb.

Re: hosting on call of duty unstable host

As advised, it does look like you may have noise on your line as your Sync speed should be near the 20mb maximum.

This could be causing errors on your line that requires the packets to be resent, this will affect your pings badly.

Post the stats again from the TEST socket.

Re: hosting on call of duty unstable host

Well that doesn't show any problems with your internal wiring which is a shame as that's usually easy to fix.

Plug a corded phone into the test socket, press a number and listen to see if there is any noise, there should only be a faint hum.

Have you tried a different filter?

That really looks like a ping problem.

Can you do a ping to jolt via the cmd prompt, get it to do 100, let's see if there is any lag or ping spikes.

Re: hosting on call of duty unstable host

OK, just to re-iterate... Modern Warfare 2 HAS PROBLEMS!, This is the game, it is not you, i promise. Your ping reduces because of the shooting of bullets, it just means that you are borderline pinging between the 3 bars and 4 bars. If you were slightly closer to this player you'd probably receive full 4 green bars in a more sustained way, if you were further away then you'd find yourself with 3 bars sustained, that is until the game has all the crazy explosions and harriers and choppers etc then you'd just see it fluctuate again anyway.
My solution to you is play a different game, MW2 is just awful, because of the sponging and lag its nigh on impossible to play it with a degree of accuracy.

Just to add... If you are host you will have full green bars, 100% ALL Game!, Never will it fluctuate. And MW2 has auto host selection so perhaps your thinking your host and your actually not, press back the moment the game starts up to see who is chosen as host.

The host in this video is TennyJay, and when there is firing the bars go down, this is exactly what i'd expect to see, i don't see the problem here other than the game is terribly laggy anyway.
