      I am pretty sure your problem is wireless related, try fixing that first before you mess around too much with settings. If you can use a cable connection, all the better, wireless cannot compete with cable, especially for gaming.

      If he's getting 100% signal surely he should get more throughput than what hes getting now though? I can get 17Mb through my laptop wireless card on a 20Mb connection

      I base my thought on the fact that his speed is fluctuating between 1.4 and 4.3 Mb which suggests an inconsistent wireless connection. It may be a setting, but it is easier to check the wireless first, rather than make settings changes which may not help. Having the wrong settings will normally stop the connection rather than slow it down.

      When I was using wireless I could get 100% signal but the speeds would range from 3-10mb, as soon as I ditched it in favour of homeplugs I got 16.4mb always.

      Ditch wireless it is a poor way to send data and remember 100% signal does not mean that it is a good clear signal just strong.
