      Unhappy CSS Ping problems

      Hi,

Since registering to Sky's TV, Phone & Internet package my online gaming (mainly CSS as I play that the most) is randomly slowing down. Some days it's fine other's it's not.

I know there are other threads with similar issues but i'm not exactly a 'techy' kinda guy, hence my own thread to keep things easy.

I'm using Sky Connect (unfortunately Sky hasn't reached my area yet).

I've heard about this 'max delay' setting which should be lowered but i'm unsure.

Any help would be much appreciated.

      Cheers.

      Jay

Curious what pings do you get? And what happens to your pings? Wondering if it's similar to mine, probably is due to being on connect.

On a typical UK server I get between 12 - 40 ping. But randomly when I join a server or on certain days it always jumps to about 100 ping. Usually between 95 and 110. Now at first I thought it was certain servers. So after joining the same few servers a few times for a few days I realised the pattern was random.

My girlfriend has her PC upstairs and uses a wireless adapter from my router. So I thought maybe it's when she's connected and/or web browsing. I expect it to jump when she is downloading stuff. But again after trying different patterns I realised it was random. I'm connected to my router via cable and my gf via a wireless adapter. (I've not tried online gaming on her PC though but I would think that's by the by).

      Re: CSS Ping problems

If you ping the server from command prompt and then join the game running on the same server, do you see a difference in the reported pings between the two?

      Re: CSS Ping problems

Once you have the IP address of a server you've connected to or are going to connect to for CSS, do Start>Run (or on Vista just use the little box at the bottom)>Type in 'cmd'.

Once the command prompt window pops up type:
      ping server-IP-here

By default it'll do four pings to the server. To copy those, right click the window and select "Mark". Click the top corner of the ping results, and drag across to highlight everything. Then right click again and it'll put it on the clipboard. Just paste the results anywhere you like after you've done that.

You could also use a free tool such as How To Get In Windows Server | Ping Test Easy Freeware reviews and free downloads (never used it, so can't vouch for it).
