      Not a computer whizz

Hello this is my first post. I need some help in regards to my slow broadband connection, mainly because I keep getting red ping on MGO4 online, and being called a lagger is not nice.

I am on the mid package which is upto 8mb, I have looked at speed testers and they have said that the average speed for my area is around 4000kbps, I am currently running on 504kbps (sky test says 504kbps, other tests say 430kbps). I had a look on sky's help section and it said the router needs to be left on for 10 days, this I have not done.

I have looked at other posts on here and people usually ask for the router stats so here is mine (not sure what info you need so just copied and pasted it all)

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version 7.03.01.66
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 506 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 252 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

I should maybe mention that the cable that runs from the phone socket to the router is quite long, as it says this can affect speed.

If you can help me sort this out without having to ring sky and get annoyed waiting in queues all day then that would be fantastic.

Your sync speeds are terrible but to begin to know why you need to post your router reported attenuation and noise margin. You'll find these in the router admin pages. Click the "show statistics" button.

Secondly, are you using a wireless connection? This can/will add lag.

And yes, I'd be surprised if your long extension cable isn't contributing to the low sync problem.

There is something seriously wrong with your connection. First you must post the proper stats. These are obtained by pressing the Statistics button in your router status. This will bring up another pane, Copy and paste the result here.

      Re: Not a computer whizz

      got my stats

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 506 kbps 252 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 27 db
Noise Margin 13 db 2147483647 db

I am not using a wireless connection. I think looking at the 2147483647 db the number seems quite big, is this my problem?

      Thanks for the quick responses.

      Neil.

Get the router onto your socket without an extension and take new stats.

Into the Test socket if possible, but not using a long telephone extension.
