      Bad routing causing lag

This is a traceroute to a TF2 gaming server:

      2 27 ms 27 ms 26 ms dr11.ennby.ov.easynet.net [89.200.128.206]
      3 38 ms 38 ms 37 ms 5acf002e.bb.sky.com [90.207.238.46]
      4 45 ms 47 ms 44 ms be2.er10.thlon.ov.easynet.net [195.66.224.43]
      5 315 ms 242 ms 358 ms ge0-1.linx.lon.rapidswitch.com [195.66.224.207]

Hop 5 doesnt look too healthy, and neither is my gaming connection because of it!

And heres the faulty router in all of it's faulty goodness:

How did you run that second part? I know how to run the traceroute, but not sure on the second part. I think Sky is terrible for gaming.

      Ok pings. (24/05/08)

Instead of typing tracert x.x.x.x, do ping x.x.x.x -t

the -t tells it to keep going until you hit ctrl+c.

It seems the fault is from hop 5 and this looks to be outside the sky network so sky would not be able to help,

Try and do some other tracert tests using other servers and or sites.

      Re: Bad routing causing lag

      Odd, today the issue is:

      2 37 ms 34 ms 35 ms dr10.ennby.ov.easynet.net [89.200.128.204]
      3 45 ms 46 ms 44 ms 5acf0026.bb.sky.com [90.207.238.38]
      4 49 ms 49 ms 51 ms 67.17.198.202
      5 215 ms 243 ms * 67.17.198.201

But from what I can find out, i'm the only person having these issues. But if its outside of the sky network, how can it only affect me? Or maybe i'm the only one noticing it...

Will do some tracerts from other machines.

      1 2 1 0 70.84.211.97 61.d3.5446.static.theplanet.com
      2 0 0 0 70.87.254.5 5.fe.5746.static.theplanet.com
      3 0 0 0 70.85.127.109 po52.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com
      4 0 0 0 70.87.253.25 et3-2.ibr04.dllstx3.theplanet.com
      5 210 4 0 64.208.170.197 GigabitEthernet7-3.ar2.DAL2.gblx.net
      6 166 252 353 67.17.198.201

Well, it gives up to 353 even from a traceroute from another machine on the internet, so I guess its not me and i'll just wait for it to be fixed

Was going to say the same thing.

Looks like the issue lies with the game server it's self:
      5 315 ms 242 ms 358 ms ge0-1.linx.lon.rapidswitch.com [195.66.224.207]

Search rapidswitch on google and it brings up the game server host!
So it doesn't look like an issue with the router.

      Re: Bad routing causing lag

I play TF2, on sky i will get, at least 2-3 times a day, an instant ping of over 600 from a normal of about 50-70.

is it doing it all the time or just at night as your on connect you could also be suffering from traffic shaping as well as a dodgy connection to the game server.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

      Re: Bad routing causing lag

I have the same kind of issues. My pings hit the roof during peak hours, normally around 120, which most CSS servers kick you off if over 100.

What confuses me is that if i ping the server ip from the command line i get the following:

      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=122
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=122
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=122
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=122
      Request timed out.
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=122
      Request timed out.
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=122
      Reply from 89.145.117.69: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=122

      Ping statistics for 89.145.117.69:
      Packets: Sent = 9, Received = 7, Lost = 2 (22% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
      Minimum = 47ms, Maximum = 50ms, Average = 48ms

Yet when i'm on the game my ping is 120ish.

Very confusing. This doesn't really matter to me as I requested my MAC yesterday so I should be shut of sky very soon, but these issues need resolving as we are paying for an insufficient service!
