Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

Hey, so i've had this connection for quite a while.. but recently i've been really annoyed with my pings compared to other people I play matches in css with, most of them getting around 15-20 ping... and then theres me with about 50-60..

Anyway, I did a speedtest the other day, and I get 860 kb/s and about 370 upload.. 61 ms to the Maidenhead server, and I live in Maidenhead.
As my step-dad works for Sky, I knew we was on the staff package, which I was thinking was about 2meg considering my 860 download on speedtest.net. And my average download speed is about 75 kb/s.
So I asked him to call up Sky and ask for an upgrade to max, and he did. However we were told that were actually already on the max package, which really annoyed me.

I entered my telephone number in the BT speedtest and it said I should be getting 4meg max, and the sky test told me 4.5 meg.

Should this be happening? And should I be getting these results on speedtest.net?

Having high ping doesn't help in official matches, and i'd love to lower it a bit.

So is something wrong? Or does this seem fine?

I'll try and provide any info for anyone

Re: Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

I kinda wouldnt trust speed testing sites I used the same site (speedtest.net) and used the Maidenhead server and got a 85mbps rate(10MBbps). Just got one for the london server (maidenhead is down) and the result:

      which apparently is:
      156.508 mbps (megabits per second)
      19.5635 MBps (megabytes per second)
      (from: Unit converter).

And i'm on max, doesnt make too much sense does it? Try downloading a big file from fileplanet and you should see more "Normal speeds".

Another good "speed-checker" is using usenet, however I won't go any further with that.

Could you post your stats from the master or test socket, so we can see if the is a problem somewhere.

Are you wireless ? Are you using an extension? All of these can cause problems.

Re: Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

How exactly can I do this? Have never done it before and dont have a clue how to.

Im not on wireless, and i'm not sure what you mean by extension? Sorry

EDIT: I logged onto http://192.168.0.1/start.htm with username; admin. and password; sky

      I see the information on here I dont think is what your looking for, but I noticed down on the list it said;

      Modem
      ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 1024 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 412 kbps
      VPI 0
      VCI 38

Is that correct? Should it be saying 1024 kbps? Or should I just ignore that?

Also here is my speedtest.net result, this is what I get a tad more or less everytime

      Maidenhead server down atm

ALSO, I am on ethernet at the moment. Just went onto the main comp connected to the router, view the connection and it was this; #
      http://s288.photobucket.com/albums/l...connection.jpg

I was told I was on max?

I still dont know how to get the stats you are looking for though

Re: Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

      You need to post the:
      Connection Speed
      Line Attenuation
      Noise Margin

Sorry I dont know how to access that information on your router.

Looks like you may be capped, do you suffer any noise on the line at all? Also how many sockets are there on the telephone line and are you using any extension leads? If more than one socket is in use make sure filters are correctly placed.

Re: Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

What do you mean by noise on line? I dont think so, but im not sure. I havent noticed anything

Were using an extension lead upstairs to the router, then a ethernet cable to my room.

Earlier I phoned up sky and got my max delay set to 8, this made my ping alot better and my download is a about twice as fast on speedtest.net on average

Though that is to the Maidenhead server this time.

However, before I called them up my internet connection thing said "1.0 mbps" ( connection.jpg - Image - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting )

The speed is NOW, 1.8mbps after I called them up to have my max delays changed, could this mean I am being capped then?

      EDIT: Also just got

Connection Speed 1888 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 31.0 db
Noise Margin 19.0 db 14.0 db

      where it was

Connection Speed 1024 kbps 412 kbps
Line Attenuation 50.0 db 30.4 db
Noise Margin 19.0 db 21.5 db

      before.

Re: Whats up with my connection? Slow download and low pings with max package.

If you are on an extension lead that could be the reason for the low speed. Have you tried connecting into the main socket temporarily or into the test socket? Would help to show where the issue is.
