      Question What is max delay...?

      Hi folks

I've been reading through some of the posts and have found the term 'max delay' coming up when referring to on-line gaming. Can someone perhaps explain just exactly what this is (i think it might have something to do with ping but not entirely sure) and what is deamed a resonable level of delay. How do i check what delay i currently have and how do i change it if i need to? Any info at all would be fine...

      cheers x_employee (non broadband ;o)

      Re: What is max delay...?

I'm sure someone will be able to explain it better but I'll give it a shot. Data is transmitted to and fro across the net in packets. Max delay, I believe, is a period of time that is allowed for a successful transmission / receipt. From this the lower the delay the faster the response ie the ping is lower.
To check what your settings are you need to get detailed router stats, easy if using a V1 router, bit trickier if not.
To get them changed you need to contact sky.

      Nice try but no banana

Max delay refers to the interleave setting. There are two elements: delay and depth. Both are inter-related. Interleaving is an error correction process (to help with bad/long lines) which unfortunately has a negative impact on latency.

For an explanation of interleaving, see here (ignore that it is written with BT in mind - the principle is the same with all ISPs including Sky).

Thanks all. I'm trying to eliminate all possible causes of my regular disconnections. Yesterday was particulary awful, disconnected on a handful of occasions from xbob live, speed was fluctuating from 2mb up to my normal 13mb didn't seem to remain steady or stable at any time of the day. Once again, thanks guys.

It actully sounds as though errors are building on your line. If the speed is high and thenc oming down it would say to me that there are. If just going back and forth then it may also be the setup or the router itself
