Question Noob to on line gaming... a few questions

I just got a PS3 and have not played on line yet, i see a few posts about pings need to be low for gaming to be a lot better.

When i ping BBC - bbc.co.uk homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet i get 59 m/s but when i use Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test i get a ping of 110 m/s on the London server but i get about 50-55 in the Maidenhead & Sittingbourne servers which one do i believe ???

if its the bbc for e.g. is that ok or do i need to get my max delays lowered to 8 for a better connection ???

ive posted my stats below if that helps

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 416 Kbps, Downstream rate = 8096 Kbps
      Link Power State: L0
      Mode: G.DMT
      Channel: Interleave
      Trellis: ON
      Line Status: No Defect
      Training Status: Showtime
      Down Up
      SNR (dB): 12.1 13.0
      Attn(dB): 23.0 15.0
      Pwr(dBm): 19.8 0.6
      Max(Kbps): 10144 1120
      Rate (Kbps): 8096 416

Leave it as it as to start with, if you find that it works ok then you don't need to worry about changing anything.

It's not a question of believing one result over another. A ping test just measures the ping to that particular server so if you got a ping of 50 from one and 2000 from another that's telling you more about the server than it is about your connection.

You need to compare your ping to a well known and consistent site like the BBC, with other people's results. That will then tell you something about your connection. A ping of 59 from the BBC is about average for a Sky connection. Reducing your interleave level (providing your line can handle it and yours probably could) would reduce that down to maybe 30ms.

Cheers Saturday, i think the best way for me to tell is to go on line with my ps3 and see what its like on COD4 and see if it drags or not.. you know the old saying if its not broken dont fix it......

If you're going to be playing COD4, it might be worth putting your PS3 in the routers DMZ as UPnP doesn't seem to open all the required ports for some reason. I did this and find that I connect to games a lot quicker now.

will that be a problem for the PS3 by putting it in the DMZ ?

Shouldn't be, I've never heard of it causing any problems for anyone.

Re: Noob to on line gaming... a few questions

As a guide, my pings to bbc.co.uk were around 45ms. After having max delays reduced they are 28ms. I can't say that I notice any real difference though when playing online.
