Poor connection & ping Advice Needed

Over the last few days Ihave noticed that my ping has become quite erratic, it was always a stable 48-52ms now it will run from 55ms for a few ping attempts and then 120-600ms for a few more times and may even time out foe a go or two,

My download speed which would always be quite good up to 16Mb is now under 3Mb.

I have a filtered faceplate on the master socket with the router plugged into it, I have tried my Netgear rangemax and the Sky supplied router with the no change.

The only thing that I can think may have changed is that I asked Sky to reduce my max delays last week via the online form.

After reading through some other threads I am still not sure if this has been done, stats below.

Gaming on the x-box is now nearly impossible and not worth playing, I can hear no noise on my phone.

      Hope someone can help.

Re: Poor connection & ping Advice Needed

Another router log taken over a longer period. I moved from Nildram a few months ago on fastpath and the only problem I have had before one this was with the Sky portal (still cannot log in)

Thumbs down Re: Poor connection & ping Advice Needed

Not sure but I think that the max delays may have been reduced, I also seem to be running at a slower speed, have I been capped?

Still problems with random ping spikes which make playing on x-box live next to useless at times.

What do you think I can do? When I was with Nildram I was always on fastpath with out any problems.

In the first set of stats you were uncapped and unusually your interleave delay has been set to zero which effectively means you are on Fastpath. In the latest set you have been capped. In both sets there are no signs of any connection problems. You have an excellent connection.

Are you connecting wirelessly? If so then I suspect the problems you were originally experiencing may be at least in part wireless related not connection related - more specifically, if you are using Vista then you may be seeing "Vista spike".

Try changing wireless channels. This may help a little if it is a wireless problem.

If it is also a Vista problem, search Google for "wireless ping spike vista" or similar.

A test you could run is to continuously ping your router (ping 192.168.0.1 /t). If you get the spike every 60 - 70 seconds then that would confirm the problem.

To solve both problems, connect via ethernet. Once that's sorted I'd get onto Sky and find out why you've been capped.

Re: Poor connection & ping Advice Needed

First thanks for the reply, it looks like you may be right, when I ping the router I get 1ms pings for a while then a sudden spike as high as 100ms.

It is not a problem on the pc side of things as I only really surf and download the odd iso so no need for great pings there.

Think I will run a cat5 cable to the xbox to see of that sorts it out.

      Thanks again.
Next to tackle the capped speed, Sky tier 3 here I come.
