most of the time when max delays are reduced lines are ok, but as original poster will testify this will sometimes give you an unstable line

Touchwood it should be ok, my connection seems rock solid at the moment. Will have to be a case of 'suck it and see', i can always phone them back up if it all goes belly up!

Re: max delays reduced connection now totally unstable

Remember that lowering the max delay can have other affects on the line regarding stability and error correction. And if your on adsl2+ the nominal max delay is 32ms each way and while this can be lowerd can affect a high speed line drastically so its not just a simple "fix" in these cases. It will require a bit of testing to make sure its going to be okay at those settings.

Although if your on g.dmt there should be no issues at all with 8ms.

Nice one Richone, maybe I'll be able to kill a few people when I'm gaming online now, instead of just being cannonfodder!

Re: max delays reduced connection now totally unstable

Sorry to butt in here with a trivial point, but the 'D' statistic in the detailed stats in the interleave depth, not the maximum delay. Sky can set the DSLAM to have a max delay of, say, 10 milliseconds, and then the DSLAM and the router negotiate an interleave depth and block size such that no packet of data will arrive more than 10 milliseconds after it was sent, but the interleave depth will be different according to other factors, such as sync speed. A lower connection will have to have a lower interleave depth to achieve the same max delay, compared to a faster connection. This is why you sometimes see people who have very slow sync speeds with Sky (because they're so far from the exchange) having lower interleave depths than the 64 down, 8 up that is most common.

But don't ask me what the default max delay figure is that Sky use, because I have no idea. At a guess I'd say it's 20 milliseconds on my connection, but I've no idea if that's the universal default.

James, it's always good when you drop in. your explanations are much better than mine (not just more tecnical, but also easier to understand)

I had high lighted the D figures as i thought from what i had read on other threads, when people had posted about getting there max delay changed, this was the figure that seem to change on there stats ?
