      XBox Live Issues

      Hey,

I have just had my Sky broadband activated and everything is fine browsing wise, but for all my efforts I can't connect to XBox Live.

The connection test page gets to DNS and fails everytime. I have read literally everything that I can find on the net relating to the problem, opened ports, turned UPnP on and off, allocated static IPs and then removed them but can't get past the DNS problem.

Have rung Sky and been passed from pillar to post with no help at all.

I'm connected to the net wirelessly and have an ethernet cable connecting the XBox and the computer. Have never had a problem with connection before so am completely baffled.

      Please help

      Thanks

Goto the Sytem blade of the dashboard,
      Select Network settings,
      Then select restore factory defaults.
Reboot xbox and try connecting again.

Thanks, have tried that but still can't get past the DNS stage.

      Any other ideas?

      Re: XBox Live Issues

You have 3 options to get your 360 to connect.

Option 1 is to purchase a wireless adapter for your 360.
Pros : No messy cables from your 360 to the router or PC. Direct connection to the router means you will be able to set up port forwarding to have an open NAT status on the 360.
Cons : Expensive (An official one costs 60. 45 approx for a different brand)

Option 2 is to purchase a long enough Ethernet cable to run from your 360 to the router.
Pros : Not as expensive as a wireless adapter. Direct connection to the router means you will be able to set up port forwarding to have an open NAT status on the 360.
      Cons : Messy wiring.

Option 3 is to continue to keep your connection the way it is, and run the Internet Connection Setting wizard on the PC. Details will follow.
Pros : No money to pay. Not as much in the way of ugly wiring.
Cons : Time consuming and difficult to set up. NAT status on the 360 will be moderate or strict as you will not be able to use port forwarding.

If you go with option 3, first you need to change the routers IP address.

The problem is, the router has the same IP address that ICS on windows xp tries to assign the X-Box connection.

The only fix is to access the router : http://192.168.0.1
      Username : admin
Password : sky (this is the default password for the router. yours may be different.)

Change the routers IP address to 192.168.1.1
To do this, click on "LAN IP Setup" under "Advanced" in the left hand menu.
Now change the "IP Address" under "LAN TCP/IP Setup" to 192.168.1.1
      Click "Apply"

If you have set up a static IP address with your PC/Laptop, you will need to change it after this operation, but if your network connection is set to automatically detect network settings, you should be fine.

Now run ICS on the PC/Laptop.

Now start your 360 and you should be up and running in no time.

Personally, I would go with option 1 since your PC is already connected via wireless, so there should be no signal problems.

I had to go with option 2 due to weak signals.

      Re: XBox Live Issues

By the way, if you are going to use ICS, you only get a NAT status of MODERATE on Xbox Live. If possible you should use bridging.
All is explained in this link for you.

Thanks for all the great help guys.

I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get a wireless network adaptor to solve my problems, as I need my NAT status to be open for gaming.
