Re: Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!!

I called sky, with an advisor who didnt have a clue, all i asked was to have my max delay turned down, but alas. I am to receive a call from tier 2 sometime today or tomorow. I doubt that will happen but we will see. My ping is 50-60 on all uk servers, spiking to 90-100.

Re: Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!!

I'm definately going to have to try and do this.

Switched end of July from BT 1mb Fixed to MID. Went from ~15ms / ~20ms to ~86ms on Sky .

Apart from the ping, all else seems to be ok. Long line (with a chunk of Aluminium in there somewhere) connects at ~2600kbps to ~2800kbps but ping is dire since the move.

**Edit**
Just put in a request via the customer support form. Lets see if I can save myself a phone call. At least one advantage of having it in writing is that if they cut and paste my request to Tier 3, they will get the request without the effect of chinese whispers .

Re: Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!!

Not quite sure how Sky support works, but I've been having a problem with the Error 300 issue...think if I rang them up and said the issue has come back, but Tier 3 now know how to solve it, they'd put me straight through to Tier 3? I could then pretend its suddenly started working after a router reboot (which happened this morning) and ask for my Max Delay to be reduced?

EDIT: It works! (Not that I was doubting)

The telephone op. said she had no idea if it would work, but she'd do it anyway.

My pings have halved...Google is 42ms a go, while it used to be 150ms, my Speedtest.net ping has halved done to 45ms from 90ms, I'll test out games later

Re: Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!!

Still no reply from my online support request. Still ~85ms.

Submitted a second request now and asked for somebody to please responed to both requests. I'll try giving SkyBB a call in a minute but seeing as it's Saturday I'm guessing that it might take a while to get through to somebody that will truely be able to help.

Re: Low Pings WITHOUT Fastpath!!!

Well thumbs up to Sky Support.

Just called up and asked for my Max Delay to be lowered. Initially blagged that I was on hold to Tier 3 when I had lost the call. The Tier 1 lady had a look on the system and found no notes from my call so went through the fault diagnosis script for a slow connection.

No more than 5 minutes later I was put on hold and then transferred to Tier 3. Spoke to a very helpful guy who dropped the Max Delay from 32 to 8. At the same time he also bumped my SNR target from 6 to 9 and capped my line to a max of 2860kbps. Current connection is now at 2496kbps instead of my previous ~2800kbps with SNR of 9.5db, pings to Jolt at ~35ms and BBC at ~30ms (down from ~85ms and ~78ms respectively).

So a successful call in many respects. I had to make a small sacrifice on my max sync speed but I think I have reached a happy medium.

Pro's:
Pings to Jolt dropped from ~85ms to ~35ms
Pings to BBC dropped from ~78ms to ~30ms
FEC's decreased quite a bit (although I've not really had any speed issues prior to today due to FEC's)

Con's:
Max Sync set to ~2860kbps on my line (not a big problem for me as my router only ever reports a maximum possible sync of ~3300kbps with a actual sync of ~2800kbps - still a big increase personally for me over fixed 1mb on a long line).

Will monitor things over the next few days and see if anything else changes but so far so good.
