Question about Sky card for Freesat from sky

About 2 weeks ago I decided to cancell my Sky+HD Entertainment Extra subscription because I wanted to downgrade to Freesat. Sky have cancelled the sub which will expire on 2 January (good timing for Christmas!!) and was told by the OP that I should phone Sky on the 2nd and ask for Freesat to be switched on. I was also told that it will cost me 10.25 p/m for the recording facility, which is ok until I decide if I want to buy a separate Humax box or stay with Sky. But I was told that I also needed to buy a NEW viewing card for 25.00 as well. But I already have the white card. So my questions are: do I really need a new card? Also if I use Freesat from Sky for 12 months then decide to take up a full subscription again will I be treated as a new customer or as an existing customer?
      Thanks for the help.

Re: Question about Sky card for Freesat from sky

I was under the impression the existing viewing card would be OK to use as it was, not sure if that has changed or not.

On the Sky FAQ pages it says

I already have Sky digital satellite equipment - what else do I need?

All you need to gain access to the free channels available on the digital satellite platform is a Freesat from Sky viewing card, which costs just 25. If you’d like to access the interactive services available, you’ll also need a working phone line. To purchase a viewing card please phone Sky on 08448 244 400.

Re: Question about Sky card for Freesat from sky

Freesat does not have to be 'switched on' it is just there. If you have a card, you do not need to buy another one. When your Sky+ features stop working, call them up and tell them you want to subscribe for Sky+ features only. As you are continuing to subscribe I do not think you will be classed as new after 12 months. You would need to cut off all subscriptions for at least 12 months to be classed a a new customer. It can take some time for the Sky+ features to be removed, some report they are still working months after there subscription ended, so don't start paying until you have to.

Your existing viewing card will allow you to watch free to view as well as free to air channels for which you do not need a viewing card. Don't know what part of the country you are in but without any viewing card the EPG will give you regional channels as if you were in London. I would wait until you lose the recording facility then call Sky and ask them to re-instate your Sky+ subscription. This will allow you to record and play free channels as well as play any none encrypted recordings already in your planner. Make it clear when re-instating the Sky+ subscription that you are not re-instating your viewing subscription and check what your monthly payment will be. While ever you are making monthly payments to Sky you will remain a Sky customer.

Thanks for the quick replies. I guess that maybe I shouldn't panic and leave it until I get switched off as you guys say. I hope that they do leave me switched on for a few months after January. It will be the first time I got anything "free" from Sky since I joined over 10 years ago

Having left Sky just about 6 weeks ago I can confirm that the existing viewing card reverts automatically to 'Freesat from Sky'!
There is no need to call them to do it or pay 25 for a new viewing card.

BTW, I got a letter from them 3 weeks after I'd gone offering me the latest 'New Customer' deal if I would return!

You get a free FAQ for Freesat on their website?

      Good luck.

The problem is that I still want to continue recording programmes after the subscription ceases, so as seawright says, I will still be classified as an existing Sky customer because I will have to pay Sky 10.25 to be able to record.

Here is another question: Will I still be able to watch the recordings I made already before the switch off including the HD shows?
