Freesat from Sky v free Sky box

This is a discussion on Freesat from Sky v free Sky box within the Freesat forums, part of the Sky & Sky+ TV category; Just reading through the T&Cs (surely there are better ways to spend an afternoon) and under "Sky boxes and set-up" ...

Freesat from Sky v free Sky box

Just reading through the T&Cs (surely there are better ways to spend an afternoon) and under "Sky boxes and set-up" it states:
You do not have to subscribe to Sky TV - available directly from Sky call centre (standard set up 120) - limited to one per household.
As I read it that would mean that someone who had never had Sky TV could get what is effectively Freesat from Sky for 120 instead of 175 a saving of 55. Even if they have to buy a viewing card for an additional 25 they still save 30.

I think that is for set up only, its extra if you want a box. Freesat from Sky is 175, which includes a Sky HD box and card.

That sentence tacked on to the end of the Boxes and setup section is probably there for some legal reason. A bit like a lot these free competitions which state you don't have to buy anything to enter, but there is no way to enter if you don't buy something.

If it is there for a legal reason, then legally Sky should be obliged to honour it.

Would you supply your own box then pay Sky 120 to set it up?

The fact that "Standard setup" and price is in parenthesis would indicate that the statement
You do not have to subscribe to Sky TV - available directly from Sky call centre - limited to one per household.
would still make sense without it.

Re: Freesat from Sky v free Sky box

Checked with Sky and it looks like their offer of a free box without subscription & 120 setup fee went out with the demise of the Standard (not HD) Sky box.

Re: Freesat from Sky v free Sky box

To be fair, if someone wants Freesat, I would tend to recommend a dedicated Freesat STB. A better idea would be Freesat+ or Freesat+ HD.

The initial costs might be a little more, but there would be no monthly costs afterwards.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

I was looking for something for my mother. She is not interested in recording. She lost TV with the Digital Switchover. I recommended satellite but the DSO adviser told her she could get a freeview stb installed free of charge (I think she was told 20 for freesat) which she accepted and now complains that she can't get any decent TV.

Re: Freesat from Sky v free Sky box

I am wondering if a local installer could be found to install a dish, allowing you to install just a STB then?

Looking at the Argos site, a basic kit for the dish would cost 38. The cheapest Freesat STB is 30. looking at their website there are various offers too.

      Results for FREESAT

Personally I would opt for one which allows her to record if possible though. This way she can record something whilst away from home or on another channel whilst watching the first.

I may have an old white STB knocking around somewhere you can have? Remote maybe a bit battered though.
