I have now tried both of these and they did not resolve my issue.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN

I am probably not the best person to answer this as I have not yet got my non-Sky router talking to the Sky network.

      However my understanding is that:

1 - As with most networks all that is required is an acceptable username/password pair.

2 - Sky names and passwords are based upon the issued router's LAN address and a password.

3 - The logon process does not require the address of the router being used.

Although the above may seem bizarre my understanding is that this form of client authentication is based upon DHCP option 61. I am surprised that LAN rather than WAN addresses are used.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN - RESOLVED

I eventually resolved this with tcpdump.

I spent more hours than I am prepared to admit trying to install Wireshark on two different Macs. I failed to get it working on either. This is the most Mac unfriendly software I have ever encountered.

      This is what I did:

1 - Remove power and phone line connection from Sky modem/router

2 - Connect one computer to router via ethernet wire

3 - Paste the following command line into computer (use Terminal on OS X)

      tcpdump -Xs0

4 - Hit computer 'return' key

      5 - Apply power to Sky modem/router

      6 - After about 2 minutes search output for 'sl|' (letter s, letter l & pipe)

      7 - Identify: 'LAN address'@skydsl|'6 character password'

8 - Put name (LAN address@skydsl) & (6 character password) into alternative modem router

At some point perhaps somebody will discover the algorithm used by SR102 modems and remove the need for Wireshark or tcpdump.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN

My earlier post should have read:

3 - Paste the following command line into computer (use Terminal on OS X)

      sudo tcpdump -Xs0

However here is a more efficient way to get the name and password from an SR102:

1 - Remove phone line connection from Sky modem/router

      2 - Connect power to Sky modem/router

3 - Paste the following command line into computer (use Terminal on OS X)

      Code:
      z=3; while [ $z -gt 2 ]; do  while IFS='|' read n p; do echo; echo Name and password are: $n and $p; echo; z=1; done < <(sudo tcpdump -c 8 -qAs0 | egrep -o '[a-f0-9]{12}@skydsl\|.{8}'); done
4 - Hit computer 'return' key

5 - Supply admin password when requested and hit return key again

6 - Connect computer to router via ethernet wire

7 - Wait for name and password - usually only takes a few seconds

8 - Paste name and password into alternative modem router.

The above has been tested on a G5 with OS X 10.5.8 but it may work on a range of computers, OSs and Sky modem/routers.

Repeat steps 3 to 6 if you need to try this more than once.

      The above code defaults to
the 'lowest numbered, configured up interface'. Consult tcpdump man page (-i option) if you suspect a problem with this.

The above code assumes an eight character password. If this changes in future the '8' can be modified.

The password discovery process may be more efficient if all internet applications are closed especially email and browsers but this is not critical.

Please report any difficulties or successes with other computers, OSs or routers. If necessary Google my name for contact details.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN

      .
Name and password can be almost instantly extracted from SR102 modem/routers with the following Bash script:

      Code:

      z='([a-f0-9]{12}@skydsl)\|(.{8})'; while read y; do [[ $y =~ $z ]] && { x="Name and password: ${BASH_REMATCH[1]} and ${BASH_REMATCH[2]}"; sudo killall tcpdump; }; done < <(sudo tcpdump -Alnqs0); echo $'\n'$x$'\n'
      Follow my earlier instructions.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN

      .
      Description:

The following code facilitates automatic discovery of Sky modem/router ADSL user-name and password with it connected or disconnected from the telephone line.

      It is not necessary to:

      A - disconnect other devices
      B - close applications
C - reset the modem or remove its power

      Procedure:

1 - Paste the following command line into a computer (use Terminal on OS X) connected to the router.

      Code:
      for i in `ifconfig -lu`; do sudo ifconfig $i down; sudo ifconfig $i up; done; z='([a-f0-9]{12}@skydsl)\|(.{8})'; while read y; do [[ $y =~ $z ]] && { x="Name and password: ${BASH_REMATCH[1]} and ${BASH_REMATCH[2]}"; sudo killall tcpdump; }; done < <(sudo tcpdump -Alnqs0); echo $'\n'$x$'\n'
2 - Hit computer 'return' key

3 - Supply admin password if requested and hit return key again

4 - Paste name and password into alternative modem router.

Repeat all steps if you need to try this more than once.

Good job Neville, just one small point, in C) you say - reset the modem or remove its power. If you do the latter, surely you have to turn the router on again. Sorry if I am misunderstanding.

Re: Difficulty replacing SR102 with DG834PN

Some earlier methods required the modem/router to be reset or have its power removed and then reapplied. My tests show that this is not necessary as removing and replacing an ethernet cable causes the modem/router to broadcast its name and password several times. My latest code does this in software by finding all 'up' interfaces and taking them 'down' and then 'up' again.

Clearly it will not work without the power on but what I said was: "It is not necessary to reset the modem or remove its power." but perhaps it is too easy to miss the first part. The following layout change (now edited in earlier post) may be clearer:

The following code facilitates automatic discovery of Sky modem/router
ADSL user-name and password with it connected or disconnected from the telephone line.

      It is not necessary to:

      A - disconnect other devices
      B - close applications
C - reset the modem or remove its power

It would be useful to have feedback from those with other platforms/OSs. I am not sure if this will work with other Sky
modem/routers but perhaps somebody will try it.

That's fine Neville. Have you tried checking your result with the on generator, using the Sagem settings?
