Ive done it! Flashed router and got my sky password!

then surely all we now need to do is flash the router with the netgear firmware and enter our mac code with this password. I find pulling the plug during a firmware upgrade VERY risky to say the least.

I just tried this a few times, couldn't get the recovery utility to work.

At one point I thought I buggered the router, I have flashed it back with the Sky firmware.

and i take it your still here so it works again then

so if its in the firmware on the cd i mean the actually password/mac code and settings it may be the mac code of router as username then one password for all or maybe not i sometimes confuse myself

or is it hardware locked like thing

Yes this is what I was wondering too...

The username is the mac code of the router and perhaps the password is generated from this mac code with an algorithm? Surely all router passwords can't be the same? Obviously difficult to verify this as no-one would want to reveal/post there password here

I guess if say five of us reveal two digits of our passwords each from different positions in the sequence then we'd know if they were all the same without compromising too much security.

Yeah I was thinking that would be a wise move, damage limitation and all....
Actually I guess we could start out with revealing the product of the two digits (d1 x d2) which would act as a sort of checksum. Once all were all agreed about having the same results we could confirm by revealing the actual two digits.
It's nice to trust people, but it's nicer not to have to.

Edit: Sorry to keep editing my posts but I realise I was talking nonsense there, if one of the digits were a prime it would be trivial to find both digits from the product. Something like dividing the product by 10 and giving the remainder would be a better safeguard.

AOK, I'll see if I can reflash my router first. If I'm not back then you'll know to leave well enough alone....


Edit: One other thing.... if all the passwords were the same then it'd be pretty easy to pull someone's MAC using wifi and then hijack their account as we were saying earlier. If it's a hash of the MAC then we'd better hope Sky have done a good job of it before someone makes a keygen.
