Why would I call Sky? So I can be told to check my filters and that I've got the router plugged in? I've never to this day received any useful assistance from a call centre. I use a proper ISP for my main line (need a static IP for my mail server).

Supplying a router without essential options for configuring the target SNR is ridiculous, I doubt anyone is going to "stumble" into that. Fifty reboots later and the line speed at 2am is still the same as 2pm despite a huge difference in line quality followed by constant disconnections during the early hours. Good stuff.

Sky will generate more support calls for themselves from routers dropping out in the evening and early morning than they ever would by allowing people to configure the target SNR manually. I've spoken to several regular users who've called regarding that problem and in some cases even cancelled their accounts.

i said it to warn you dont expect any help from Sky now you're using your own router...

as for not getting useful information, you've obviously not spoken to me then

EDIT: also, didn't you check to see if Sky offer static IPs? its known that they dont so a little checking (and not just saving money) would've helped you there...

I wouldn't expect any help from Sky whether I was using my own router or the supplied hardware. :P

I know they don't offer static IP's, that's why I kept my main line with a regular ISP and use Sky for general use.

I've yet to discover any router which has such a facility as part of the documented user interface. Maybe the more up-market ones like Draytek's have it, but I haven't used one of those in ages. Normally to change the target noise margin means having to do something "hacky" like telnet'ing into the router and typing an undocumented command.

I just can't understand why you think the absence of such a facility is ridiculous. It seems like the norm as far as I can see, and in any case its main use would be to squeeze out a slightly higher sync speed by lowering the target noise margin on, for example, a long but quiet line, or to make a line more stable by increasing the target noise margin on, say, a line with very large daily noise fluctuations. Not exactly run-of-the-mill stuff, really.

The "hacky" stuff is what I was referring to. Locking you out of accessing such options is pretty much pointless as a "regular user" would be unaware of where to look and why anyway.

A line where the noise quality varies from early morning to mid afternoon is very run of the mill, all four of my lines suffer a noticable drop during the night (at two seperate properties). The last "home use" router I owned which didn't allow you to set a target SNR was my ancient 3Com OCR812 from around 9 years ago.

My Sky DG834T stays connected continuously after setting the the SNR to what I wanted (along with my other non-Sky line/router). The Sky DG934G at my other house is fine all day until around 12-1am where it then goes into a loop of connecting/disconnecting until 8-9am.

Re: How to obtain your username and password Netgear V2 DG934G Router

I am not a Noob PC wise, but I am finding the 9834 I have very frustrating as the Downstream Connection Speed reported in the stats varies so much (it's currently down at 288kbps on a line where I have had as high a connection speed as 1420kbps (those were the (3) days)).

Back to the thread, the 9834 is a PoS as far as range and wireless signal strength are concerned compared to the Belkin I would dearly like to go back to.

does the Web-based interface change to a standard (Netgear) one following the flash firmware upgrade or does it remain pretty much as per the Sky one?

See below for latest impressive figures (not).

use your belkin as a wireless access point - plug it into the Sky one with ethernet and you can use that for your wireless

The modified firmware is almost exactly the same as the Sky firmware, and the web interface is identical. It has two very small changes - (1) it enables telnet access to the router and (2) it creates a file /tmp/password.txt containing the connection username and password at the point where it tries to connect to Sky.

The modified firmware even includes Sky's automatic update facility and so, as far as I can see, doesn't actually breach Sky's terms and conditions. Of course, actually using the data from the password.txt file to get a non-Sky router to connect to Sky's network is against the T&C's.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I am trying to reduce the amount of kit I am using not create more - Mrs Toppam always gives me 'the look' whenever I run downstairs to plug the Sky router into the master socket!

Thanks James. You are a brave man to have tried this first!

I have downloaded the firmware, but will just sit on it until I actually get a decent stable connection!

I have a reported Downstream Connection Speed of 992kbps with a Line Attenuation of 63db and a Noise Ratio of 9db. Best ever speed I have had is 1440kbps, but I currently have 252kbps.
