I had Fibre installed a couple of weeks and at first the results at first were disappointing, around 17mb download, and I spoke to Sky who arranged for a BTO engineer to visit on a Saturday. When he came the first thing he noticed that the master socket was not updated correctly. When he looked at the junction in my loft, which the first engineer did not look at even though I told where it was, he was flabbergasted as some of the wires on that we just twisted together (I emphasise that this from the previous owner of the house) where extensions were added. He removed the extension wiring as I did not need them. He them went to the cabinet and got the port, or something, cleared. And the result I was up to nearly 38mb download. ten days later this is the result:

Then today I got a mailing from Sky with the message on the envelope 'Important information about your ESPN subscription' I had already cancelled that but opened the letter anyway. On the enclosed letter was an offer for 6 months Fibre at half price and in the small print I noticed that one could pay for line rental upfront. I could save about £110 pounds over the year.

I rang up and got both offers, so it was a good couple of minutes on the phone.😄

We are aware of issues affecting customers in the Markyate and Luton area.This is due to damage to the fibre caused by excavation work. Engineers are working to get this repaired as soon as possible. However, the excavation work has also damaged power cables, which must be repaired and made safe before full repair of the damaged fibres can start. Fibre repair will commence at 2300 on 22nd May, and the engineers hope to have service restored for all customers by 1200 on the 23rd May

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone had got this router/modem to work with sky fibre?

I have tried connecting the BTO modem to the EWAN port and adding my sky username and password with the connection type being PPPoE (similar to the draytek solution in this section I believe) however it looks like it just fails to get an IP from the BTO. I have also set the MAC for the connection to be the same as the sky hubs but no joy. I have also set the router in router only mode. I have not set any security WPA on the router yet, does this need to be set up and same as sky's for BTO to provide an IP?

If anyone could provide any assistance that would be great, I have also emailed tplink today.

The billion and draytek routers are a little out of my budget.

Thanks all

As an existing O2 customer ( and very happy with O2 broadband ) I am trying to understand the likely issues when my service is eventually transferred to Sky. I believe I will have the option to move somewhere else but Sky are keen to keep O2 customers and would offer a good deal to sign up. The problem is that I already have an established Netgear wireless N Gigabit Router with extensive Gigabit switched wired network and can't believe that Sky are insisting I use one of their Skyhubs which by all accounts has very poor wireless performance and only 100mb wired LAN capability. Everything I've picked up so far indicates very complicated workarounds involving hacks to get at Username/Password and a lot of uncertainty whether a third party router would work anyway. Can someone advise whether it is achievable for a relative non techy or think of some compromise by which I could at least retain my Gigabit wired LAN. It just seems crazy that Sky are imposing such draconian rules. I haven't got a problem with the concept of a locked down modem but the thought of having to move to a service with a locked down router is just unacceptable. For example what happens if I sign up to a 12 month contract and then find out I can't use some of the devices on my network e.g ip cameras etc which need port forwarding, DynDNS access etc.

I have currently got TV, broadband and talk with Sky (pending cancellation). I have been with Sky for over 13 years, I've only had Sky broadband and talk for the last year though. I've got some sour cancellation experiences to share with the SU community.

Called Sky on Saturday 11th and told them I wanted to cancel my TV package due to financial issues (these issues being TalkTalk is cheaper :p). They put me through to a higher up cancellation agent who said as I'm on the lowest package (Entertainment), there's nothing they can do to save me money - they never even attempted to offer me any sort of bespoke retention deal. The bloke on the phone even had the cheek to advise me to remove the HD pack to save money. I left that at that and went online to order TalkTalk Plus TV.

Called Sky again on the 12th to leave notice for my TV subscription to be fully cancelled. The lady on the phone told me to wait until my year's broadband and talk offer ended so they could do me half price line rental. If I'd have accepted that offer, I'd actually be paying more than I have been for the last year. I said no thank you, please just cancel my TV subscription. The lady's tone of voice became hostile from that point on, but at least my account shows the TV cancellation as effective in 30 days from that conversation so it all went through.

Since then, Sky have called my wife almost daily whilst I've been at work, she's explained to them that I'll be back in the evening but they continue to call. I shall have to call them later and tell them to stop harassing us.

Anyone else had similar/negative experiences cancelling their Sky services? Did anyone get a decent deal or did you get a pi** take or no deal at all, tell me in the poll?

Quote:

 It is time to look at the speeds that people are getting from our speed test on another broadband provider. This time it is the turn of Sky Broadband who sell three main products, Sky ADSL2+, Sky Fibre and Sky Fibre Pro which are all unlimited. There is also the off-net ADSL product, but as there is no simple way to split that product out, those results will be in the ADSL2+ analysis.

The results plotted here cover the same period as the TalkTalk speeds (April 2013) we blogged about back on 9th May.

Sky do not release information on how many fibre customers they have, but we know that Openreach has only sold 200,000 to non-BT customers, and 73,000 are with TalkTalk, but what proportion of the remainder is with Sky is anyones guess. Overall only 3% of the Sky speed tests were from people on the Fibre Pro (80/20) product, 19% on the Fibre (40/10) and the vast bulk of tests on the ADSL2+ service.

<Graph>

The reason for pushing forward with looking at Sky Broadband, is the ongoing complaints on some forums that people are seeing odd speeds from the fibre services. The shape of the graph is a little odd on the Pro service. The upstream speeds hold up well, but compared to other FTTC providers there does appear to be an odd bulge in the downloads speeds, where you would have expected a smoother drop off. This tends to fit in with the half speed complaints that Sky Fibre users are complaining off, and is believed to be down to some Alcatel hardware in the Sky network, rather than a configuration issue on the Openreach side of things. We can be pretty sure that this is not mis-identified connections because their upload speeds are so much better than the 9.5 Mbps maximum you should see from the slower fibre product.

There is a small caveat to the Fibre pro results and that is with the product obviously not so widely sold by Sky, and thus only counting for 3% of the tests, it is possible that data may be skewed, we will obviously continue with periodic plots and share the results.

<Graph>

The 40/10 (known as this because it is a 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload profile) product seems to fit the profile that we have commonly seen for providers selling a 40 Mbps FTTC based service, reflecting the fact that not everyone lives on top of their green street cabinet. For those trying to pick between Sky and TalkTalk as their chosen provider, Sky wins on upstream, because their entry level fibre service is using the up to 10 Mbps variant from Openreach rather than the fractionally cheaper 2 Mbps product TalkTalk use.

<Graph>
With some 78% of the speed tests carried out on connections that are obviously ADSL2+ based, we get a very nice graph that shows the classic shape for ADSL2+ speeds, i.e. that a small percentage get very good speeds.

The statistics that we can pull from the data are as follows:

<Chart>

For those who were hoping that we would be saying that ISP X is faster than ISP Y, so far it is proving difficult to make such a simple statement. What we can clearly say though is that if you are able to get a FTTC based service and are continuing to complain about your ADSL2+ speeds, then look at the difference it can make and bite the bullet and upgrade. For those who create content, or just want their digital camera backups to a cloud storage service to be faster, FTTC is certainly the way to go.

 By the end of 2014, almost every Surrey property is set to gain super-fast broadband access.

BT has unveiled a new super-fast broadband project that looks set to make Surrey the best-connected county in the UK.

The telecoms giant has signed a contract with Surrey County Council to roll out next-generation broadband to almost 100 per cent of local homes and businesses by the end of 2014, surpassing the government's target of 90 per cent coverage by 2015.

Up to one-fifth of properties not included in commercial deployments are set to benefit from the £33 million deal, which is expected to boost Surrey's economy by around £28 million per year.

Customers will be able to access speeds of up to 80Mbps as a result of the work, with BT also due to launch an ultra-fast on-demand broadband service delivering download capabilities of up to 330Mbps.

In comparison, the UK's average download speed stands at 9Mbps, while in Surrey the figure is even lower at 7.4Mbps, according to Ofcom.

Bill Murphy, managing director of next-generation broadband at the BT Group, said: "This project puts Surrey well ahead of the game.

"It goes further than the government's national aim for fibre broadband by 2015 and brings the county within a whisker of 100 per cent fibre broadband availability."

Thought I might just throw this out there to start a healthy discussion... ;)

I believe that many people see Pay TV as an expensive luxury they can't afford whilst others think it's great value, but media reports do suggest that the biggest growth in TV services seem to be the subscription free versions such as Freesat & YouView, which may just be people cutting their cloth accordingly in difficult times, but I wonder if it really is?

Illegal content has been around since the days of dial up and over the years it has grown exponentially as broadband speed has increased. For the record, I don't cast judgement over anyone that chooses to access content in this way, in fact, I'm beginning to see why it is so attractive and not just from the cost point of view.

If you know where to look it is possible to watch every match you could want from the Premier League to the Champions League live online, sometimes even in HD. Every film or TV series that is released is available to watch or download and often well in advance of it's official UK viewing. For example, we enjoy a series called Castle shown here on Alibi and now on episode 10 of season 5, but in the US it has already completed it's run. Sure enough I can download the remaining 14 episodes in HD and ad free today to watch when I like rather than having to go through the agony of 1 episode a week!

With a Fibre connection the amount of content available online and in great quality (albeit illegally) is amazing and the bottom line is, the people that are consuming this material are not the ones being targeted with action by the authorities.

A bit like the music industry has tried to move on I think the TV & Movie industry will have to do the same and give us access to the content we want, when we want it and for a fair price otherwise more and more people will move to getting their content this way, regardless of the toothless legality of it all.

So why should I continue to pay for a premium service that doesn't give me what I want, when I want it, especially when I can get what I want for free?

What do you see as the future for Pay TV?

I have a previous thread somewhere, where I got plenty of help swapping a single LNB to quad LNB.

Anyway, I got it all connected and found everything to be a-ok. But I have noticed I have had to turn the TV's volume up quite a lot, compared to when I had the standard white STB and single LNB.

Could it be the box's settings or the LNB signal need fiddling around?

Thanks!

 While online viewing of sport is the fashionable way to watch an event, there are still plenty of people who enjoy actually going to watch their favourite sport being played and with The Cloud rolling out free WiFi to Lord's Cricket Ground people will find it easier to stay online.

The ground before now only offered free WiFi in the hospitality areas, but extending it to all of the 28,500 seater ground will make keeping up to speed with the statistics and other sports events happening around the UK easier for spectators.

We look forward to seeing what speeds people are getting over the free WiFi, so if you want to show others the sort of speeds available remember that the postcode for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is NW8 8QN.
