      Happy Birthday Jacques Cousteau

Today would be the 107th birthday of Jacques Cousteau. Happy Birthday wishes to him.

Jacques Cousteau is credited with many things, some of which are disputed. Many others are not.

What isn't in doubt is that he helped to open up the underwater world for many people through the many films and TV series which he and his team produced. Many people will have seen them and been inspired to take up diving.

Today we can view them on our TVs when they are repeated or perhaps we can view them on-line...

Sadly he died on 25th June 1997, at the grand age of 87.

I know he has shuffled off this mortal coil; hence I found it odd you sending him birthday wishes. Had he replied thanking you, then I think we would all have wished to know.

      Re: Happy Birthday Jacques Cousteau

I was looking at something else the other day and found the above page. A lot of people I know loved the films and TV series that he and those around him produced.

There are 10 full length videos on that page, if anyone is interested in viewing them. I thought it was something interesting to share.

When I noticed the date was his birthday I thought that I'd include the relevance in the post.

If you don't like it, fine. You don't have to view them.

Yes he died 20 years ago, less 2 weeks. Yes there was a big family dispute. Yes his favourite son died. Yes some artefacts, such as the Ship's Bell from Thistlegorm, are missing and the finger is pointing squarely at him for robbing ships which should not have been robbed.

He, along with a few others that include Hans Hass, did bring the underwater world to many people for the first time.

There are well over a million people across the globe who dive now. He was involved in the creation of the kit they use. It has evolved somewhat though.

I remember his series on TV well, starting 1968 I think, where he cruised the seas in his research ship Calypso. It was one of the most informative and enjoyable documentaries of its time. What isn't generally known is that he had a distinguished career in WW2, with underwater warfare. He was responsible for developing much scuba gear used in the fight against the Nazis.

Was he ever cleared in certain accusations that were made about him?

Hard to say. There has been a lot of fighting within the family. The ship Calypso has had a few issues after it's accident in Singapore (hit but a barge and sunk in '96). These issues appear to still be going on.

I'd have to research him a lot more to confirm whether or not he fought against the Nazis. His home was in the Vichy area of France during WW2.

As for the missing artefacts, to the best of my knowledge they are still missing. In a video made by him and his team, available on YouTube, it is clearly visible that the bell was there. Some 30 years later when the wreck of the Thistlegorm was rediscovered it was missing. No one appears to have dived her in between. Sadly a lot more damage has since been done to the site and it breaks my heart knowing what has been done.
