Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
This is a discussion on Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK within the Everyday Life forums, part of the Community channel category; I think that would be a rather naive approach by any leader. I came across a site some time back ...

Re: Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
I think that would be a rather naive approach by any leader. I came across a site some time back which stated that back in the 60s there were 3 nuclear warheads targeted at Portsmouth and Portsdown Hill. One for the Harbour, one for the hill (Early warning Radar station I think it was) and a spare for the harbour.
Knowing that there are several nuclear bunkers in Scotland, I somehow don't think that Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen would not be on a similar list somewhere.
I was actually under the impression that there is some resentment in having the nuclear subs in case there is an accident. Of course no one wants this either, which is why the people working there do so with a great deal of professionalism.

Re: Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
Great Britain will cease to exist (time to finally name Team GB properly!), but there would still be a UK... It would just be something like "The United Kingdom of England_and_Wales and Northern Ireland".
One problem for England if Scotland does vote yes, is that it will be a lot easier for the Tories to win a General Election

Re: Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
Great Britain can't cease to exist as it is a geographical entity, not a political one. Wales and N.I. have never been true Kingdoms so the proper name of this political state would be the Kingdom of England including Wales and NI. Lets hope it does not come to that. Our little poll is running much the same as the main polls, slightly in favour of staying together. Personally I hope it stays that way.

Re: Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
Great Britain is a political entity as well as the name of the island. The "Great Britain" part of the UK's full name is for that, not the island.
Although the island will still exist after independence (hopefully), the political entity won't.
The Acts of Union 1707 brought the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland together as the Kingdom of Great Britain.
The Kingdom of Great Britain later joined with the Kingdom of Ireland to make the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland... which later became the current United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after the Republic of Ireland broke away.
The "United" part of the name isn't from Scotland being part of it, it's from Ireland / N. Ireland being part of it. "Great Britain" came from England + Scotland.
Therefore if Scotland left the UK, there would be no "Great Britain" within it anymore.
You're right about Wales, though - for these purposes it's part of England, so I guess the name would be the "United Kingdom of England and Northern Ireland".

Re: Say Yes/No to breaking up the UK
With 47% against this reflects the main polls, I for one would be happy if it finishes this way. One thing I had not thought about was having such an important decision decided on a simple majority. Just think about it, one single vote could effect everyone in the whole of the UK and NI. Even my local club requires 66% to be in favour of a change in its Constitution.

Whichever way it goes we should - hopefully - know the outcome within the next 24 hours.
