      Why not fixed yet

twenty odd years ago when i first got sky, every once in a while the remote control would lock up, and the sky box would be uncontrollable, the only solution was to turn the sky box off from the wall then back on again, and wait for it to reboot, then alls fine till next time. twenty years later it still happens, isn't this long enough to get this sorted, i know its only a minor niggle but annoying, especially if it happens half way through a recording and you lose half cos you need to restart the box.

Could you let us know which make & model STB you have please? Also which firmware version is installed?

The make and model number is located at the rear of the STB.

If you have a Sky+ HD STB, then by using your Sky remote control and pressing <Services> 0 3 you will be able to get the firmware version (1st line).

Model DRX890-C version number 4f3120, hope that's right, but as I said this has been around for over twenty years, I returned to sky a month ago after a few years break, and its happened twice already.

      Re: Why not fixed yet

Over 20 years the hardware has changed and the software has also changed and rewritten several times. You cannot compare today's boxes with those 20 years ago.

Software is very hard to write that has no bugs whatsoever. Sky are now getting customers involved in testing so the lock-ups should get fewer and fewer.

      Re: Why not fixed yet

Your telling me, my first skybox had no decoder, when sky started encrypting the decoder sat on top, and yes the boxes have greatly improved, which is why I'm surprised the remote control bug is still there.

When the box fails to respond to the remote control can you still control it with the buttons on the top of the box? Also could you let us know what software the box is running? Press services on the remote then zero followed by three it should then be listed on the screen under system details as Model Number starting with "R".

      Re: Why not fixed yet

The latest version is R006.058.60.00P and is being rolled out at the moment. The number which you quoted I think is the ROM version. The number I wanted, and sorry for the confusion, was the first line.

If you could confirm which you have, there are some other things which we can suggest.

As Annie has mentioned, the most recent firmware is quite reliable. She and I have been involved in the beta testing and the group as a whole have put it under a great deal of checking through. We were not the sole group of people involved and Sky do test things in-house before rolling it out even to the Beta group and any others who received it. You'll forgive us for taking it personally, but we definitely do want to ensure that yours works well, so if you can provide the information it would be very useful.

      Re: Why not fixed yet

      Ok, that's good.

      That version was quite stable.

Could I ask you to perform a Planner Rebuild? This may help. Before doing this, if you could 'purge' the contents from the Deleted tab in the Planner it may help too.

To perform the Planner Rebuild do the following:

      Using your Sky remote press <Services> 0 0 1 <Select> 7 <Down>

This should have selected "Sky+ Rebuild". Follow the instructions on your Screen to initiate the process. It will take around 10-20 minutes to complete. Any recordings will be suspended during the planner rebuild, so it is best to do it when things are quiet.

As for the firmware update, this is being rolled out at present. You should get it over the next 4-5 weeks.

      Re: Why not fixed yet

Ok have tried that and will see what happens, but saturdays lockup was the worst i've ever had, the whole thing locked up, the screen locked up, none of the buttons worked, the remote locked, the only thing i could do was to pull the plug, which means the end of the program i was recording was lost.
