      Remember her well...

Having grown up in this area, the story of the Titanic has always been known to me. I donít think that I had any relatives aboard, although one branch of my family can be traced to Lyndhurst, in the middle of the New Forest, a town where some of the crew did come from.

Today marks the 100th Anniversary of when the RMS Titanic hit the Iceberg at 11.40pm. She slipped below the waves at 2.20am on the 15th April 1912, some 2 hours and 40 minutes later.

As a result of this disaster there were huge ramifications. One example being that sufficient Life-rafts be available on all ships for everyone. Another is that radio communications should be available and monitored at all times. These and many other measures have helped save many more lives since.

There are a few stories circulating about what particular song the Titanicís band was playing when she finally sank, but it is generally accepted to be ĎNearer My God To Theeí.

1514 people died as a direct result of her sinking. The last person, who had survived, a nine week old baby at the time, died only a few years ago (2009) aged 97. Remember them well.

The final transmission at around 2.17am was CQD CQ. It was halted abruptly as the power was lost.
