Re: tips on how to successfully lay a carpet

Can we not get this all into one thread getting complicated. lol

The best tip I will give you is take you time, never cut to much at a time, you can always cut more off and make sure you have plenty of sharp blades. Also take all doors off it will make things easier.

It will help a lot more once you know what you are going to do with the laminate floor and so on. I can then give you a step by step guide, I have laid enough carpets in the block of flats we manage, to tell you, use the proper tools and right materials.

From what you've said about the concrete floor under the laminate, I'd leave it alone. You are going to open up a whole can of worms with that floor. Between the two should be a membrane to keep damp away from the laminate. If the concrete is cracked and broken then there is a good chance of raising damp.
The floor is part of the fabric of the building and the landlord should deal with any problems there.

If you must carpet it then get a good quality foam-backed carpet and use spray adhesive to secure it. Cut it to size, not over or under. Under no circumstances penetrate the laminate or you will penetrate the membrane underneath it and give yourself one massive headache. Your landlord would not be happy repairing it after you've hammered nails through it!

You could always do what I did in the hallway get some real heavy commercial strength carpet tiles, like they use in airports, and lay them on the laminate.

The things are so heavy they stay put without any glue and all you need to do is to cut the ones at the edge of the room to shape with a stanley knife.

well the doors will need trimming and i would be using underlay, the only problem i see is that damm floor. so im just trying to get it up now, if i can get it up then i have won and its ok ish sailing, the floor has a concretebase , then black plastic then another layer of concrete, the lam floor underlay, it im going to glue the carpet on to the lam then i will just rip it up. the floors is already cracked at the door so it should be easy , i will report back when the war on methods is over

ok, thanks, there is no gap between the wall and the lam , 1 month is the estimated renovation completion time , so hopefully the floor disintegrates
