Eurosport poised to broadcast Wimbledon live after BBC deal

Eurosport poised to broadcast Wimbledon live after BBC deal | Media | The Guardian
Plan for pay-TV channel to simultaneously air coverage still needs to be approved by regulator Ofcom

Eurosport is on the verge of being the first commercial broadcaster to be allowed to broadcast live UK coverage of Wimbledon this summer.

The pay-TV channel has finalised details with the BBC about how it can partner with the corporation to air the tournament from 2016 to 2020 and is now awaiting consent from regulator Ofcom.

Under the deal Eurosport will simultaneously broadcast live coverage of the final with the BBC but also air evening highlights timed not to clash with the corporation’s own nightly roundup.

The BBC has aired Wimbledon for eight decades but with increasing pressure on the licence fee it has been looking to make savings with tie-ups with commercial broadcasters.

Speaking at a press conference in Paris in which Eurosport and its parent Discovery announced a number of sports rights deals, Eurosport chief executive Peter Hutton said he could not yet announce a deal about Wimbledon but said details how how it would work with the BBC have been ironed out.

He said “It’s with the regulator, everything else is sorted” and pointed to Ofcom’s website.

There the proposals put forward by the two companies are laid out and say, “The BBC will broadcast live coverage and highlights of finals and non-finals play on BBC1 and BBC2, which are qualifying services, and additionally on their radio services (including BBC 5 Live) and interactive streams.

“Discovery will broadcast live coverage and highlights of the finals and non-finals play on Eurosport 1 and Eurosport 2, which are non-qualifying services, and additionally on their interactive streams.”

Ofcom has put the proposal out to consultation until 15 June which gives it little time to make its decision before Wimbledon begins on 27 June.

An Ofcom spokesman said that after the consultation closes the regulator will publish a statement “shortly afterwards”.

Discovery is hopeful the groundbreaking move will be given the green light by Ofcom and Hutton said if it goes ahead it gives Eurosport coverage of the four grand slam tennis events.

He added that it would be a “real privilege to be first pay broadcaster to be allowed into Wimbledon”.

Discovery and Eurosport have been on drive to buy more sports rights since Discovery became a majority shareholder in 2014.

Not a tennis fan but it will be interesting to see how the HD coverage on the BBC compares to Eurosport as I've always thought they have probably the best looking HD channels on satellite to my eyes.

Eurosport sports coverage and presentation has improved a lot last few years across the board. Their tennis coverage has been very good too.
Yes, Eurosport has always had the best HD out there by far. The bitrate stats show this.
See from some other statements today, that Discovery/Eurosport have made a lot of recent sport acquisitions across Europe.

Could this be the death knell of Wimbers on the BBC, much the same as the Open and motor sport? Might take a few years but eventually there will be no free viewing of Wimbledon.

Re: Eurosport poised to broadcast Wimbledon live after BBC deal

      Certainly this is possible Tom.

Gradually the BBC is showing less and less variety of Sport and all the subscription services appear to be picking it all up.

Many years ago ITV gave up showing their show to compete with Grandstand on a Saturday. It might not be that long before the BBC gives up too.

They are showing the Olympics this year. Perhaps that'll be one of the last things they show. However if they lose everything else, then they will also lose the experienced team of presenters and staff behind the scenes.

Simple fact is that the licence fee isn't enough to do everything the Beeb is trying to be. IMHO, they should cut back all the services as opposed to the content. We have got 101 services now all with poor content. A few years back we had much smaller number of services with great content.

Personally, the core services Radio 1-4 and bbc1/2 should remain as they are. The rest (and I include radio 5 and bbc4) should start doing ads to support the funding.

Certainly the BBC should be showing advertising. The recent review seriously messed up here and didn't push this forward.

I appreciate that a lot of people object, but there is always the fast forward button.

Grandstand ended on the BBC in 2007. Are you thinking about Football focus and Final Score on a Saturday during the football season?

As for the Olympics, if your interested, its worth reading all the recent press releases including the Discovery Olympic deal from BBC Director of Sport Barbara Slater, within the BBC blogs.

Re: Eurosport poised to broadcast Wimbledon live after BBC deal

Ok, I guess it's pretty obvious I'm not a huge sports fan .

If indeed Discovery are looking to also take the Olympics away from the BBC, then I guess that there won't be much left of anything sport wise for the broadcaster.

      On live TV?

That will be worth an absolute fortune if you can develop it!
