Remember to retune your DAB radio from 29 February

Remember to retune your DAB radio from 29 February | Ofcom
On 29 February 2016, the UK's second national digital radio multiplex will be switched on, paving the way for DAB listeners to receive even more choice of stations. DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is the format used by digital radio sets to receive stations.

Listeners will be able to enjoy 18 national DAB stations, all licensed by Ofcom, and launching from 29 February onwards:

      • talkRADIO - news and current affairs
      • talkSPORT 2 - live sports and sports talk
      • Virgin Radio - rock and pop music
      • Share Radio - business and financial news
      • Mellow Magic - relaxing and melodic music
      • Magic Chilled - fresh laid-back hits
      • Absolute 80s - 80s music
      • Kisstory - 'old skool' dance tunes and anthems
      • Heat - pop music, celebrity gossip and entertainment
      • Planet Rock - classic rock music
      • Sunrise Radio - Asian music and speech programmes
      • Awesome Radio - Asian music and speech, with elements of Islamic content
      • UCB 2 - Christian music
      • Premier Christian Radio - Christian music and speech
      • Premier Praise - a brand new station from one of the UK's leading Christian broadcasting groups
      • Panjab Radio - extra choice for British Sikhs and Panjabi speakers
      • Fun Kids - national children's radio stations
      • Jazz FM - jazz, blues and soul

To help consumers access the full range of available stations, Ofcom is joining a nationwide campaign to encourage listeners to retune their DAB radio.
Most digital radios can be retuned in a minute

Press the Autotune, AutoScan or Scan button on your DAB digital radio. It usually takes no more than a minute for your radio to update the station list.

This launch follows the award of a second national DAB multiplex licence by Ofcom to Sound Digital, a consortium of Arqiva, Bauer and UTV Media GB, in March last year.

      Digital Radio in the UK

According to Ofcom's latest digital radio report published in November last year, nearly all households are able to receive digital radio services. Ninety-six per cent of households have televisions which give them the ability to listen to digital radio, compared to 80% through their broadband connection, and over half have a DAB radio set.

The number of new cars fitted with digital radio has almost trebled in the past three years, and nearly three quarters of new cars now come with DAB as standard - up from 25.5% in 2012. Three in ten drivers have a digital radio in their vehicle.

The highest rate of DAB take-up is in Surrey (62.7%), closely followed by Sussex (61.8%) and Bristol (59.8%).

      Is it not?

It does state that they are switching on the new multiplex from today onwards, so perhaps your area will get it later.

Re: Remember to retune your DAB radio from 29 February

Multiplex 11A will not be available in all areas as there are likely to be conflicts with France, Holland and Belguim if I recall correctly.
All or at least one of these countries are already using 11A so there are restrictions on coastal areas.

I also believe that it is not planned for this mux to have as much coverage of the UK as the existing mux's.

I am not happy about this as I am on the extreme fringe of reception of this mux and cannot tune in whilst at home. I can access it driving around the local area but it is very, very patchy with lots of dropouts.
An awful lot of people excited by the channels available on the new mux will be dissapointed to learn they can't receive it. Another annoying fact, is that some channels on the existing D1 mux are moving to the D2 mux.

Re: Remember to retune your DAB radio from 29 February

Dug out my old Dab and it retuned all those sound digital stations.

Be honest, just use the iPad now for all radio listening, not found a station I cant tune in to.
Put it through my bluetooth speaker and its just superb.
Do like Talksport, perhaps one of the few stations i regularly listen too most days, so be interested in talksport 2 and talksport talk.

We do have a load of local stations here, that on dab you can barely pickup (even though they say yo can) - Solent Wireless, but to be honest the stations ive heard within that brand briefly were amateur radio at its worst, if they worked.
Im sure many are saying bring back or keep am/fm!

DAB is and always has been hopeless here as well. The website pretty much admits as much as well as it tells me I can only get a couple of channels that are 'good quality', the rest are all 'fair' i.e. don't work.

Ok with a portable radio the reception will be poor in many places. Are you able to use an external aerial?
