      Music legend David Bowie dies

Music legend David Bowie dies - BBC News
Music legend David Bowie has died, his son says

Singer David Bowie has died at the age of 69 following a battle with cancer.

His son director Duncan Jones confirmed the news and a statement was released on his official social media accounts.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," it said.

"While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."

The singer only released his latest album Blackstar on his birthday on Friday.

There had been rumours about Bowie's health for years.

His last live performance was at a New York charity concert in 2006.

      Sixty-six facts about David Bowie

Blackstar, which includes just seven songs, has been well received by critics.

Bowie's breakthrough came with 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

His hits include Let's Dance, Space Oddity, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel, Rebel, Life on Mars and Suffragette City.

He was also well known for creating his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

      Space Oddity

He also carved out an acting career including his role as an alien seeking help for his dying planet in Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976.

He did a three-month stint as The Elephant Man on Broadway in the 1980s.

Bowie also starred in Marlene Dietrich's last film, Just a Gigolo (1978), and played Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).

Bowie was born David Jones in London on 8 January in 1947 but Bowie changed his name in 1966 after The Monkees' Davy Jones achieved stardom.

He was in several bands before he signed with Mercury Records, which released his album Man of Words, Man of Music in 1969, which included Space Oddity.

Sad, in my view someone who deserverd the title 'Legend'
Always kept his act different but trendy. Not always to peoples taste in his style of music, but very influentional.

Space Oddity, summer 1969, played so much just after we all got excited about the moon landings, launched his career, remember it well, singing it in the school yard, and also those stylophone adverts christmas 1970. Mind my Astronaut suited action man could never play mine!
There was also his 1967 laughing Gnome that he did, so 'Syd Barrett' that was a hit on childrens radio, 'Ed Stewart'!
My first really memories, and of course so much since.

There is so much that can be said about him that is positive.

He was a fantastic performer. Many people have loved his music for a long time now. He pushed things in new directions and managed to stay on top.

His music has been hugely influential across so many different parts of our lives.

      He will be missed.

He released his latest album only last Friday. Somehow I suspect that it'll sell in larger numbers now.

Very very sad day... There are no words... A Legend in the true meaning has gone. You will be greatly missed but your music will live forever.

      RIP Starman...

There's not many people (celebs) that I class as a legend or my hero, but Bowie is one of them.

Gutted I never got to see him. Always hoped he'd be a special guest at glasto or even do a small tour with blackstar, but alas it's not to be.

Really sad sad news to wake up to, very upsetting to lose a true legend.

Yes unlike many who are given the accolade, he was a true legend. RIP.

I do think BBC News are going ottp about it. I doubt if the Queen will as much coverage when she dies.

I couldn't count all the arguments he got me into.
When I was a teenager, all my friends liked Slade and couldn't accept that I liked Bowie's music.

I had the Aladdin Sane haircut as I already had the exact same hair colour naturally. I also removed my eyebrows as he did.

Re: Music legend David Bowie dies

Some great tribute pieces on sky, CNN, ITV and bbc news channels early evening.
Lovely anecdotes from others, Rick Wakeman being one.

Cannot say the same for that 7-30 prog on bbc, what a load of crap form those two bbc 6 djs. Glad I do not listen to that radio station. Can they not find people who can talk properly and can compose a sentence.
Suppose I was spoilt in an era of Radio Luxembiurg and the real old BBC. that set the bar.

Anwyay, had a quite a few old school friends call me up, 'do you remember, 'really sad'.
Time to shed a tear I think. do not say that often.

@dog-man What a rebel you were!

Lining up a few albums on Spotify, Low first. Nice and loud, sorry neighbours.
