Yeah stream works ok under BT. Not saying BT are perfect, probably slower than Sky in terms of global averages, but the consistency of service is good, the internet will just work.

      None of this: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...s/td-p/2836099

Speeds maxing out during peak but youtube struggling on HD

That's called overselling... Their servers can nowhere near handle all of their subscribers watching youtube clips at the same time for example. Overselling so that they can claim to have fastest speeds... fastest is their sales pitch

There are a few important differences between how BT, Sky, TalkTalk and VM operate.

VM have their own local infrastructure and servers. I suspect that they may well utilise various backhaul/trunk networks from other companies eve though they do have their own as well.

Whilst the local infrastructure for BT, TalkTalk & Sky is managed by BTO, each will have their own servers and will utilise different backhaul networks.

Sky have always been pretty good at identifying and improving things when there is a bottle neck.

      As I understand it...

Sky have the acquired UKOnline fibre network which was along canal routes.

Virgin Media's network is primarily city based - anywhere there is a University as they are part of some sort of mega fast Broadband partnership with UK University's along with BT.

Talktalk is similar to Sky. They acquired their network from (it would seem Opel Networks) someone they bought in the past.

Re: BT's launching an Ultra HD box to host Europe's first 4K TV channel

When you sign up to Sky broadband is says Easynet... meaning Sky Connects you to the world via Easynet... a company that they used to own... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easynet

"In December 2013 the company was acquired by MDNX Group, the UK's largest independent carrier integrator. Combining these two organisations has created the largest independent network and hosting integrator in Europe, which trades everywhere as Easynet. The acquisition was backed by Equistone Partners Europe Limited, one of Europe’s leading mid-market private equity managers, who hold a majority stake in the organisation. LDC has reinvested in the organisation to acquire a minority stake alongside the MDNX management."

Whereas BT uses Wholesale network or something

There's you, your ISP and then the network carrier... your ISP upgrades their end to allow user's to tap into more bandwidth at the
      network carrier

Did sky not retain ownership of the actual core network though?
(Often described as a figure of 8 across the uk).

Also, i've always been under the impression that various sections, at various points, between an exchange & the core can be bought or leased from any number of companies, including competitors such as virgin.

      https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/st...d-complete.htm

You get what you pay for... they are not allowed to favour one company over the other... I.e, they cannot accept payments to make some ISP's "up to" whatever the best

      https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/st...-broadband.htm

      This is advertising for ISP's

      Example....

      Benefits for you
No up-front investment – enjoy easy access to the high-speed broadband market and meet your customers' needs without any need for new infrastructure.
New business – fibre is an easy way to meet increasing demand for faster broadband quickly and cost-effectively.
Easier sales – our products are surprisingly easy to set up and sell, so you can get to market quickly.
Superior reach – access the highest quality and largest fibre broadband network in the UK.
Sell with confidence – our stability and world-class national network means you can rely on us as you take your business into the future.

Theoretically you could setup your own ISP from your home.... using thousands of powerful desktop computers to start off with... adding more computers from your profits... then you slowly build yourself into a large company

Re: BT's launching an Ultra HD box to host Europe's first 4K TV channel

Ok, obviously this thread has gone off-topic. It was intended to be about BT launching their 4K TV Channel, not an excuse to have ago go at ISPs

      Thread closed.
