US television shows get the chop in new season launch

BBC News - US television shows get the chop in new season launch
Parks and Recreation is amongst a number of shows earmarked for the chop as US networks outline plans for the new season and beyond.

NBC said at the weekend the forthcoming seventh series will be its last but did give a starting date for the show.

Drama Parenthood, also on NBC, has been given its marching orders when its sixth series comes to an end.

The news came as part of the US networks' competitive yearly programme launch.

Each new announcement is of big importance to the channel-saturated US TV industry as the main networks not only vie for audience attention but also that of potential programme buyers from domestic cable channels.

International buyers are also in the networks' sights, particularly when it comes to new shows.

"People have more control now than they ever had before and they're using it," said Cindy McKenzie of PricewaterhouseCoopers' US Entertainment, Media and Communications practice.

"And we're still as an industry making decisions based on rules that aren't in play. The market is still there but it's not growing."

      Strength to strength

Parks and Recreation is a critically-acclaimed comedy show about a small-town parks department and local government, starring Golden Globes co-host Amy Poehler.

The show won programme of the year at the AFI award in 2012 and has been nominated for best comedy at the Golden Globes.

It is NBC's longest-running comedy and is shown in the UK on BBC Four.

Other US to UK TV exports that will to come to an end following their forthcoming series include comedies Cougar Town and Men at Work, both on US cable channel TBS.

But the channel will be taking on American Dad from Fox - which has also cancelled its previous big hitter The X Factor USA.

Elsewhere, shows that continue to go from strength to strength include legal drama The Good Wife, currently enjoying its fifth series and being renewed by CBS for a sixth.

Crime drama The Mentalist has also been recommissioned for a seventh run.

Comedy series Modern Family, shown on ABC, will be back for a sixth series and medical drama Grey's Anatomy will be carrying on for an 11th run.

Friends with better lives is not the best show but I was quite enjoying it the more the episodes went on. Shame they can't give it a fair crack.

Sadly it is always the same.

The Americans rely totally on their viewing figures. Another popular series which has effectively died is Glee. At it's peek it was getting over 12 million US Viewers. Series 5 saw no more than 7.39 million, with most under 3 million (figures from Wikipedia).

No doubt there will be some new series commissioned soon. Perhaps David Boreanaz will be in one of them (yes I know he's in Bones which is renewed).

There is not a single show in that list that I watch or give a toss about.

So for the cancellations, it's good riddance from me in the forlorn hope that they might be replaced with something I might find remotely interesting.

They'll all be replaced with newer shinier versions, that's all.
Throw away programming (or dare i say culture) at its best.

Re: US television shows get the chop in new season launch

Well the news of the new shows being developed for next year is developing. I wonder what they will show in September though?

BBC Newsbeat - Heroes spin-off show to feature original characters
Heroes Reborn, a spin-off of the US sci-fi show, will feature characters from the original, NBC has confirmed.

"Some familiar faces from the show are bound to drop in," said NBC's entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt at a presentation in New York.

"We have a big mini-series called Heroes Reborn, based on one of NBC's strongest dramas in recent years."

The 13 episodes are due to be shown in 2015.

"Its original creator Tim Kring will reboot the show," added Greenblatt.

"Plus, we'll ramp into the show with an original online series prior to launch."

No further details about the casting have been revealed yet...

Re: US television shows get the chop in new season launch

      LOL.
      Thanks Scubbie.

Recently, i've made the mistake of watching both Total Recall & Robocop remakes.
(Or is 'reloaded' the term now?)

That's a good 3hrs i'll never get back, but at least it was my choice.
I firmly believe it's slightly different when this safe, formulaic programming clogs up the airwaves though.

It's probably been said a million times before, but sky really should buy less of this U.S. stuff & invest a little more in U.K. talent.

      Just make it good.
Not some cheesefest version of a U.S. show.
