How about a 3G Mi-fi device (to create a personal wi-fi hotspot for the iPad to connect to)?

Buy an unlocked one on Amazon and then get s SIM card from the cheapest provider. Maybe Three or giffgaff? I think both do data only tariffs at reasonable cost on PAYG SIM.

Would you be allowed to use that type of device in a hospital? Up until a couple of years ago mobiles were completely banned in all hospitals, now it is up to the local health authority where and if they can be used.

I suppose it depends where you are using it. There will undoubtedly be specific areas where devices cannot be used, but it's usually ok in public areas. I've also visited people in general wards where it has been ok to use devices (maybe because the old trolley phone - remember them?! - seems to have disappeared nowadays).

It does depend on the specific ward/hospital.

A friend who is on first name basis with most of the nursing staff at one hospital (diabetes issues), has varying issues. Sometimes she gets a 3G signal on her phone/tablet, other times she gets nothing. Also some hospitals consider that mobiles/etc. should be banned due to the noise.

It can be a lot cheaper than hiring one of the TVs though.

Re: I wish sky roll out free Wi-Fi in hospitals nhs

My local NHS hospital runs it's encrypted WiFi for potentially sensitive information and protects the passwords carefully. It also supplies password free unencrypted AP's for Staff which patients can use as well. Good enough for most uses. So, if I was so inclined I could travel to the hospital on an Arriva bus offering 54 mbps free WiFi and then use the hospitals free service. The problem is what do I do whilst walking to the bus stop? Personally I watch the road so I'm not taken by ambulance to A&E however many others don't!

Re: I wish sky roll out free Wi-Fi in hospitals nhs

Due to the potential for hacking, all my local NHS networks do not allow staff to use WiFi, at least that is the excuse they have always provided.

      Nice to see things changing.

The excuse for banning mobiles etc. originally was that they could interfere with monitoring equipment.
I've just spent a couple of weeks in hospital and got so bored I hacked the TV/Radio/games/etc monitor they supply at each bed and charge for. I managed to break out into the underlying XP and find the link from the hospital network through to the Internet.

NNUH has open WiFi that doesn't even verify your email when registering 60Mb/s, unfortunately next stop is Paworth which bans all devices.
