The servers and the modem are about 40 to 50 feet from the master socket, in a small cosy room, on the connection app gadget for the modem I normally got a speed of 3.4'ish. However after reading the above and removing the 'ringer' wires (3 & 4) from the extension cable at the master socket the speed jumped to 4.7 and peaked at 5.2 so result

That is one extreme, well written guide thats handy for any newcomer to broadband.

Can you deduce from the routers statistics whether or not it would be a good idea to rewire or not?

Yes, if you have a master socket, remove it and try the test socket behind. An appreciable difference here will mean an improvement can be had.
