New vDSL faceplate needed? And CAT5E or CAT6 cable?

I upgraded to Sky Fibre a couple of days ago, and I am awaiting delivery of the hub and the activation of Fibre.

Whilst waiting, I have been doing some research on how to get the best speed out of the Fibre.

I understand it is recommended to get a vDSL faceplate. I currently have an ADSL filtered faceplate, with no telephone extensions attached to it. Would I benefit from getting a vDSL faceplate?

Also, I understand that the cable connecting the hub to the faceplate can affect speeds, depending on the quality of the cable, so I will be replacing this, as I currently have a cheap flat cable. However, from doing some research I understand that there are two different types of cable - CAT5E and CAT6 - what is recommended for Fibre, and what are the differences between each type?

I changed to the VDSL Mk2 filtered plate but get the MK2 as I believe it is future proof for something.
(It does need the original lower half front plate of the Master socket, I still had mine.)
Cat 5 seems to be normal but one lead is a Cat 6 as I'm a normal person I can't tell any difference both work for me.

Cat 5E is more than adequate. As for the faceplate I would definitely change it if getting Sky Fibre Pro but depending on the capability of your phone line it is probably an unnecessary expense for Sky Fibre unlimited.

I would wait until you have been able to check the speed with your new router before attempting to correct problems which may not exist.

CAT5e spec is what BT use for their vDSL extensions and is more than up to the job. We use that spec for our vDSL patch leads that are designed to work with the vDSL faceplates.

      Thank you for your replies.

I think I will leave the faceplate for now, and see what speeds I get with my existing faceplate.

I think I will invest in a new CAT5e cable though.

Re: New vDSL faceplate needed? And CAT5E or CAT6 cable?

Getting a good quality RJ11 cable (the cable between your phone socket and the router) is always a good idea. The ones Sky provide with their routers are not the best quality. I've even seen slightly improved stats on my ADSL2+ connection here by replacing the RJ11 cable for one made using a cat5e cable. This is the one I purchased.
