Report noisy voice calls to BT. Don't mention ADSL and don't mention you've done a 17070 test as I don't believe the general public are supposed to call that.
In my experience and from what I've read, BT often say there's no problem when there clearly is. It would be a cost saving thing. i.e. a small amount of noise doesn't matter on a voice call so why spend money to fix it. Persevere and say you're not happy. They'll then send an engineer out and chances are he/she will replace that old socket you describe free of charge. BUT, remember, if BT can't find a fault or the fault is with your wiring and equipment rather than theirs, they can and sometimes do make a charge. Keep on the right side of the engineer and all should be well.

I report a fault by BT using the free 151 number, but there was a long wait, so I used the rang back option. Then around 18:40 this evening, BT called me back - 0800 028 5085 number on my mobile and the woman called "Lucy". I explained to her that sometimes I hear crackles/hisses while I'm talking on the phone, and sometimes its clear and sometimes I hear pops/humming while I'm using the phone. I thought that it’s my phone, so I disconnect all the phones, phone extensions, then I try it with only one corded phone, but it’s still having the same problem, even the same with other corded phones. Even my downstairs neighbor experiencing the same problem as me. Then she said that there are no faults found on your phone line. Also, she explained some non-sense like "It’s the weather, like the rain and the windy interfering with your phone copper wire outside your house, and that's what is causing the crackles/hisses or other noises that you're experiencing at the moment."
Even, she suggested that I should disconnect all the phones and extensions, leave the phone socket free - unplugged for half a hour, then plug your phone back in and see the problem has cleared. Otherwise, if not, I'll arrange an engineer to come to yours and check your equipment, but they'll charge me £116 for a call out fee.
She kept going on about testing your master socket, explaining how to open the horizontal face plate, and I kept going on saying that I don't BT standard Master socket, I have the old fashion smaller phone socket, but she ignore me and kept going on about testing the BT standard master phone socket, I ended the call by saying "Ok, I'll try it tonight before I go to bed and after work tomorrow and I'll let you know how it go?"
What do you think of all this? I think they are sloppy, not even a care in the world. My phone line been there since 1973, so that must be having very old phone wiring!!
