External NTE (XNTE) to be discontinued!

BT will discontinue the use of the XNTE when current stocks are exhausted. This is due to the fact that the new vDSL services require a SSFP (Service Specific Face Plate) which in turn require.....an NTE5 socket!! If you have an XNTE and upgrade to vDSL then the Openreach engineer will gel crimp your internal wiring directly to the BT pair outside. The XNTE will become nothing more than a junction box, a new NTE5 will be fitted along with the vDSL faceplate.

That is a bit of good news! XNTEs have caused a lot of problems for ADSL users. It is a pity they are not going to bypass them all, whether you have fibre or not.

TBH, as per the post in our forums, we saw this coming from day 1. It just didn't make sense from an ADSL POV.

funny you should mention this, i had an engineer come round to me today who told me the exact same thing! I have an XNTE and he says just how much of a pain they are. He ended up taking the pair out of mine that come from the exchange and connected them directly to the pair going to my 1st socket in the house with some plastic connecter it was dont know what they really are . Anyhow my connection basically misses out the XNTE now and hopefully might give me a more stable connection

He would have used gel crimps. Is your first socket an NTE5? That is what they are supposed to fit.

Re: External NTE (XNTE) to be discontinued!

Oh right i see, the 1st socket is in my hallway and they are the same through out the house just standard sockets. An openreach engineer fitted an openreach filtered faceplate on the 1st socket into the house for me a few months ago when they 1st came out to have a look at my intermittent connection issue.

Hopefully now i am connected directly to the incoming pair from the cab rather than going through the XNTE so to speak things will stay stable. Just purchesed a new billion 7800n as well so hopefully this will help
