Unhappy help with my download speed.. desperation is hitting me!!

Hi,
I read few threads about how to increase my speed. I'm currently using Plusnet ISP and thinking to change to SKymax soon because of slow speed since I moved in this house 4 months ago. I have bought a Belkin N1 router and did few speed test as recommended on threads and using:
Broadband Speed Checker - THE UK's No.1 Broadband Speed Test

My download speed has been ridiculous. The phone line is supposed to have 3-4Mb and I barely get 400 kbps download!

Because of the (stupid) way they build the house, I can't really use the Master socket (just next to the front door... and no plug next to it unless i use a 3m long extension cable!). Anyway for this test, I set up all the cables necessary, unscrewed the faceplate and tested each sockets within 30 min to make sure it would be at the same time of the day. I found the following:

ADSL Status with TEST SOCKET (behind the faceplate) from Router
Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps) 5920 448

(I don't know the noise and attenuation as it doesn't say on the router data!
I have also disabled all firewalls.)

Wired - Speed test showed: 1800 kbps. which is not great but better.
Wireless, same status from router but download rate dropped to 800-900 kbps!!!

ADSL Status with MASTER SOCKET from Router

Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps) 4352 448

This is quite a drop!!
Wired - Speed test gave 1136 kbps stable
Wireless... speed test gives me: 700-780 kbps

ADSL Status with EXTENSION SOCKET from Router

Remember, because the bad location of the Master socket, this is really the only socket I can physically use and would like to use. It is a proper extension installed when the house was build (wires through walls) but it wasn't initially connected. So connected the wires myself at the back of the faceplate.

Router setup shows:
Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps) 1824 448

Massive drop!!
Wired - speed test: 300-350 kbps!!
wireless - speed test: 250-270 kbps

So PLEASE can someone HELP me...???

or is there any company who could help to have the whole thing checked and setup properly? On the top of it I have a PS3 that I can't use because downloads are taking 8-12 hrs for a demo game!!!

if you access the router stats page 192.168.0.1 user name admin password sky click statistics it will give you the db level plus you might need to go to the cst level for a thorughput issue but the spped you are getting in master socket seems fine you could ask for your max delays to be dropped to 16 to help with downloading

If i understand correctly as soon as you plug the front faceplate in you are seeing a massive drop? Sounds like your extension wiring is causing problems. Way to go would be a filtered faceplate (or NTE5 with bellwire filter) and see how that improves things. Can you post up a pic of the back of the EXTENSION socket?

Re: help with my download speed.. desperation is hitting me!!

I think some of the posters have missed the point that you are not with Sky and don't have a Sky router. Go here - ::. Kitz - Get your adsl line stats .:: -use the drop down box or scroll down to find your router. Look up how to find the stats and post them.

I think the problem is with your extension wiring, it is dragging your speed down both from your extension and the Master socket. Although the wiring is new it does not mean that it is OK. In fact it may even mean that it is low standard as it was probably put in by a contractor whose only interest would be profit.

Using an ADSL filtered faceplate will isolate this poor wiring, but it does mean you will need a long RJ11 cable to position your router near a power outlet. These can be up to about 15 Ms long without too much drop in efficiency.

The wireless speeds are another thing, you will never get the same speed wireless as you will wired. A 50% reduction is not unusual.

Edit _ I meant to add, removing the wire from Terminal #3 on the Master socket faceplate may give you an immediate improvement. This is the ring wire and is not required when using an ADSL filter. The constant changes will not be doing your Profile much good either.

Re: help with my download speed.. desperation is hitting me!!

Hmm, try this speedtester: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

As I tried the one you used and it suggested that my speed was 4.2meg when it is 6.9meg everywhere else?

no one seems to have noticed that after a change of setup and increased sync speed it can take up to 72hrs for downloads to speed up...

Re: help with my download speed.. desperation is hitting me!!

I think the main point is that the OP is sacrificing 1600kbps by using an extension. The rate shown for the connection speed using the Test socket is not reflected in the download speed as it takes some time for the Profile to adjust. If it were left there for a few days, it would possibly be double or more the speed obtained in this test.

Re: help with my download speed.. desperation is hitting me!!

that's what i mean...the speed increased after moving to the master/test socket but download speed wouldn't reflect this until the IP profile had adjusted...
