      Question Which non-Sky Router?

      Hi there,

As a newbie, I have spent several hours trawling through this highly informative forum, and I'm beginning if I've made the right decision to change over to SKY BB! However, my wired connection seems pretty fast and stable after a few days settling in, but I cannot get wireless to hold for more than five minutes at a time (to a Dell Inspiron laptop). Reading through the various threads, I am not alone in this problem, and am seriously considering investing in a new router. I've extracted my username and password out of my Sky router, so I'm ready to go.

I have read the list of "known working" routers, but wondered if there are any firm favourites among the die-hard techies. The Netgear DG834N looks like a reasonable choice (and PC World are selling it at 85!), Alternatively, is the Netgear DG834PN suitable as a Sky replacement. I'm on the Sky MAX service and apparently connecting at about 12MB.

Any advice on this would be most appreciated.

      Cheers

      Dave

      Re: Which non-Sky Router?

I have only tried one other ADSL2+ router, the D-Link DSL-G624M.
What do I think?...yes it is better than the supplied Netgear.
Why?...It syncs with the line at a higher speed than the Netgear.
The wireless signal is stronger than the Netgear.

I received my 3rd router from Sky today and guess what?..It will not log into
the Sky network (CHAP authentication failure). Syncs with the line fine @ 15323/768. The D-Link 16384/768

1st router died after 2 months...would not power up
2nd router stopped holding sync with the line after 1 month
3rs router arrived to day and will no allow me to connect to Sky.

      I'm impressed - most don't bother.

The simple answer is no: there are no firm favourites. Each router has its advocates who will swear by that router.

Regarding wireless "no holding", have you investigated this problem? It may be a simple one that doesn't require a new router. You could post here http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/netwo...ters-wireless/ and see if you get any joy. (If you've already done that, then sorry - I didn't check. )

      Re: Which non-Sky Router?

Thanks for the inputs and advice guys.

For some unknown reason, my wireless connection came back to life with settings back to how the router arrived (WPA-PSK), and has been solid for a few hours this evening. Maybe I was fiddling around too much, or maybe the router took time to "settle in"! I think I'll just stick with the Sky box for the present time and see how it pans out.

I will keep looking into the forum for new developments

      Thanks again

      Dave
