      External Access via FTP

      Hello,
I have a Synology DS215j NAS at home and have tried to set it up as an FTP device on many occasions but it doesn't seem to work.
I can access it very easily via my home network, but as soon as I try to use my phone or get my colleagues to try to access it, it doesn't work - commenting that "This Site Cannot Be Reached".

What am I doing wrong? I assume it is an external access issue, perhaps the firewall?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.
      Thank you

Have you set up the firewall to allow access?
How are you addressing it? t should be something like <IP address>:<Port number>
Do you have a DynDNS or similar account?

      Re: External Access via FTP

      Hi,
I go into Security > Firewall on my Router, it displays this:

      External Access via FTP-screenshot_19.jpg

However, I have - briefly - deactivated both of these and neither appear to do anything.
I test it via my laptop, which allows me direct access to my ftp://.....domain..../ via Chrome or any other browser, or via Filezilla, because I'm on the same network.

If I test it on my phone, via the mobile network, it fails. Likewise the same for my two colleagues in other areas of the country.

I have set up an FTP server using my own Synology NAS.

      Re: External Access via FTP

By default all IPv6 traffic inbound is blocked, except of course where a 'state' has been created by an outbound connection.

You need to add an inbound rule allowing FTP to your FTP servers address.

      Re: External Access via FTP

So, is that my specific local address, so 192.168.0.xx?
The actual address is ftp://myname.synology.me/ so do I use that?

This is what I get when I add the local address.... I'm very much a novice at this, so my apologies!

      Re: External Access via FTP

That's an IPv4 address your trying to add in the IPv6 rule section, remove it and enter it in the IPv4 rules section above.

      Re: External Access via FTP

I still don't know if I'm in the right place or not, but I've added 192.168.0.19 - which is the local address of my NAS to this rule section:

      External Access via FTP-screenshot_21.jpg

Applying it doesn't appear to do anything.
I can still access the NAS via the network, but not via the Internet.

I guess I'm in the wrong place again?

      Re: External Access via FTP

I'm afraid so. You must first create a service by going to Security>Services and create a service for your NAS such as FTP, select TCP/UDP and enter the Port numbers (20-21) for your NAS.

Now go to Security>Firewall rules and click Add. Use the drop-down to select FTP, for Action select Always. Enter the address of your NAS and leave Access from Any.
Leave the Log as Never. Do this for both IPv4 and IPv6, remembering to click Apply.

You should now have access from an external network. Remember that the address you use to connect is your Public address which you will find listed under the Broadband Port on the Sky Hub Status page. Your IP address followed by a colon then 20. eg 2.217.2.xxx:20.

If you are going to be using this on a regular basis you would be better getting a Dynamic DNS, as your IP is likely to change at any time. you can get one free from https://www.noip.com/

      Re: External Access via FTP

      I'm still stuck.
I can still access it internally, but not externally.
This is what I have done:

External Access via FTP-screenshot_23.jpgExternal Access via FTP-screenshot_24.jpg
I've blurred the number on the right because I assume it's my specific address, but whenever I type in ftp://myaddress.synology.me/ it works from my laptop - direct network connection, but not my phone - still using the mobile network. Via my phone it pops up with "The site cannot be reached"
      Networks are very frustrating!

      Re: External Access via FTP

Have you opened the IPv4 ports as well. If so try connecting with ftp://myaddress:20 or 21.

I think you might be better using an FTP client such as Filezilla. Its free and may simplify your task - https://filezilla-project.org/
