BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

      Hi

I have recently signed up for SKY fibre unlimited and I got the SR102 router which I would like to replace. I have already extracted the credentials required to use on my own router however I have a bit of a strange setup. My SR102 uses MER as a connection type and not PPPoA.

I have an ASA5505 which is able to do pppoe( can also do MAC spoofing to overcome MER). Is there a modem that can do MER to pppoe so i can use this to connect my RJ11 and then use my asa for the actual connection? I assume I would be a VDSL model and not just a ASDL one in order to get the best possible speed?

      Thanks
      Antonis

Re: BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

It's the router that needs to do the MER, not the modem - so, if your ASA5505(?) doesn't have a VDSL modem then you probably just need to get one (a standard BT Openreach modem, perhaps off FleaBay) because the SR102 doesn't have the ability to operate in a "modem only" mode.

If you are leaving Sky and moving to BT you won't be able to use your SR102 router.

If you don't already have a BT Home Hub BT should provide you with one.

Re: BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

      Hi seawright

I am moving to SKY and not BT (this was a typo on my original post). My ASA firewall can do PPPoE but wasn't sure whether I need to get a specific VSDL modem. I will get a BT open reach modem and post the feedback here

      Thanks

Re: BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

The BT open reach modem didn't do it. I am getting the following error when connecting via PPPoE

      PPPoE: send_pad: (Snd) Dest:ffff.ffff.ffff Src:9021.0610.bdc8 Type:0x8863=PPPoE-Discovery
      PPPoE: Ver:1 Type:1 Code:09=PADI Sess:0 Len:12
      PPPoE: Type:0101:SVCNAME-Service Name Len:0
      PPPoE: Type:0103:HOSTUNIQ-Host Unique Tag Len:4
      PPPoE: 00000012
      PPPoE: padi timer expired

9021.0610.bdc8 is the LAN port. I have tried Src:9021.0610.bdca which is the WAN port but I am getting the same errors

      Any thoughts?

Re: BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

Its just standard dhcp with your password string sent along with the dhcp request

      its dhcp option 61

      not mer or pppoe

      Thanks shonk

Unfortunately, my ASA (5505) doesn[t provide a custom field for such thing. I can either specify the MAC address to be sent or the default string which is in the format: Cisco-<Mac address>- <Interface>-<Host>.

For the latter, I have tried changing the host/interface name to <username|password>but it didn't work for me

Re: BT SKY FIBRE unlimited MER question

      Hi Shonk

I believe option 61 is not configurable on ASA
CLI Book 1: Cisco ASA Series General Operations CLI Configuration Guide, 9.1 - Configuring DHCP [Cisco ASA 5500-X Series Next-Generation Firewalls] - Cisco

I have read on some forums that SKY MER might work only with the MAC cloning. Do you have to have the username/password as well?
