Can't get friends old Sky Hub to work?

      Hi,

My friend recently left Sky and gave me his Sky Hub however, I can't get it to work? Well, all lights normal except for the Internet one.

I am a Sky customer and I have the old router. I have Win 8.1.

      Any help appreciated.

      Cheers,
      Keith

Provided the router hasn't been damaged or black listed which could have happened due to debt or contravention of Sky broadband's T&Cs it should work. Switch it on and connect it to the telephone line with a known good cable. Leave it in this condition for at least an hour before checking whether it is working.

Ok. Do a full factory reset (with power on hold reset button in for thirty seconds) and try again.

did your friends contract run out did they leave early could be chance that router has been bocked depending on how contract was closed , but could also be that agent who closed contract mistakenly blocked router you could try contacting sky directly giving router mac address pending on why blocked they could remove this

Re: Can't get friends old Sky Hub to work?

I did the full factory reset to no avail. It seems it must have been blocked, either diliberately or otherwise.

What's the situation in these circumstances? I mean, will Sky be ok about the fact it's been passed over to me?

One final question, is the hub SR101 a better tool than the sky router I have? The only ID I can see on it is that it's D-Link

      Cheers,
      Keith

Re: Can't get friends old Sky Hub to work?

Give Sky broadband technical a call. As Tenar says it may have been blocked. The fact that you have obtained a second hand router shouldn't be a problem.

The SR101 is more recent than the D-Link though there has been suggestions that the wi-fi signal is not as strong.
As you have both you could do a rough comparison test based on how many bars are displayed on a mobile device at different places around your home and garden.

Re: Can't get friends old Sky Hub to work?

The main differences between the D-Link and the Sky Hub SR101 are:

      D-Link 2640S Sky Hub SR101
External Power Transformer Internal Power Supply
      WiFi g WiFi n
      Max 54mbps Max 144mbps

WiFi n is the stronger signal. You should notice this benefit if you have WiFi n devices. If your devices are WiFi g they may not work any better.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps
Previous ADSL2+ Speed 19999 kbps 1153 kbps, Line Attenuation 17.5 db 6.9 db, Noise Margin 7.5 dB 8.7 dB
      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms
