Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
Hi,
Im re wiring my incoming connection from a master socket to a dual socket (telephone / Adsl) and want to wire the sky boxes directly into the incoming connection by punching into the pins. Is this okay to do?
Also what are the colours to use/punch down onto
Thank you!

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
It will be OK as long as you connect to the 2 and 5 terminals of the filtered faceplate. The colours don't matter. You might have a bit of bother getting a good connection as IDC connectors are designed for solid wire, many trailing RJ11/standard plug extensions are made up of braided wire, which will not connect properly.

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
I will assume that you are referring to the view Sky boxes, not the ADSL router.
Typically Pins 2 & 5 are for the filtered telephone line on the back of the filtered faceplate.
Pins A & B will be unfiltered.
Personally I would err against this idea. It is quite easy to accidentally pull at a telephone cable and break the connection if it isn't properly tethered. Replacing it would be a little more difficult than simply unplugging the old lead.
Another area of concern will be the wires. The back of the faceplate will use IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector) connections and if the telephone wire to is too thin or multi-threaded, it may not correctly make contact inside the faceplate's connections.
The whole idea of those connections is to run a telephone extension to another room/ Extension cable will have the correct size & type of wires.
Hopefully someone with more telephone wiring knowledge will comment to confirm or deny what I have stated above.

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
Is a wiring diagram on here?
I only have 1 pair being used on my master socket.
I really dont want multiple extension splitters from
My facia hence me punching the box line into the telephone line.
Shouldnt be a issue?

This is one of the most comprehensive tutorialsavailable , including diagrams and photos, .-
Guide to rewiring internal UK phone wiring
There will only be one pair connected to the AB terminals at the back of the box. If you have 1 pair connected to the faceplate, these are going to your extensions. Normally these are wired daisy chain style, with each extension socket wired to the next one in the chain.I only have 1 pair being used on my master socket.
I can only repeat what I said in my first post. You should make sure the cable is securely fixed so that it is not accidentally pulled as Scubbie suggests it may be.Shouldnt be a issue?

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
I don't know which specific wires on the telephone lead that plugs into the back of the Sky STB directly connect to wires 2 & 5, but if I were doing this I would use a circuit tester or DVM (Digital Voltage Meter).
By plugging the lead into the faceplate, you would be easily able to check which wires connected where.

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
Okay so pins A/B are for the incoming
Then I can punch down the sky boxes to pins 2/5 which is extension lines?

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
A & B are not for the incoming connection. They pass the incoming connection on to another point, without being filtered. Personally I would advise against using these unless you really know what you are doing.
As for the lead feeding to the Sky STB, you are safe to use pins 2 & 5. Please check which way around they go though by using the method suggested above.

Re: Re-Wiring Telephone Connections To Sky Box
The faceplate plugs into the Test Socket on your NTE5 socket. It takes it's live feed from there.
The full wiring specification of a BT Extension can be viewed here:
TELEPHONE SOCKET WIRING - HOW TO DO IT
It is important to understand that things have changed since the original specification was made and now you do not need to use the Ring Wire. So you only need to make use of the 2 & 5 connections on the faceplate.
