Download Managers?

I use rapidshare and hotfile but have never used a download manager,my question is-do they just allow you to download multiple files and resume them, say if you turned your computer off and on.
I want to know if they give you a better download speed or not, otherwise i'll live without one.
If you do get a better download speed, which one should i use for these two?

I've never used a download manager for either of the above sites, but do all the time with megaupload. The megaupload megamanger does excatly what you say. I'm not sure I get a better download speed as I mainly use it for uploading but the upload speed is marginally quicker.
