dg834gt router and VPN!

Howdy all,

you chaps (chapesses) have been recommended by a helpfull chap on the sky helpdesk (if it can be called that) as the ones to help with this,

Im trying to set up a VPN so i can access my home pc from work and relatives houses etc, i hope to use windows vpn, i have set this all up properly at home and at work (where im testing from) and have no luck connecting, it seems to be a problem with GRE47, after reading a bit on here and other sites it appears that sky do not like this going through their routers!

I called sky for clarification on this and after getting past the first level "helpdesk" where i had to explain what a VPN was, i got to speak to a chap who knew his stuff and and advised that sky do not support GRE in their firmware for the router, but to ask here as there are ways around that.

I have the Netgear DG834GT router and windows XP

Is flashing my router with the netgear firmware the only way im going to get this to work?? or is there another way around the problem,

also ive seen some bits about sky kicking people off for not using / modifing their kit?

any help suggestions etc will be appreciated

phantom

VPN works fine with the Phase 2 Netgear by all accounts...

Re: dg834gt router and VPN!

@IANTE
As far as I know it also works O.K. on the V1 netgears which the OP has. I VPN into work with no problem.
However we are referring to VPNing out and phantom appears to want to VPN in.

@phantom
I have no experience of running a VPN server but I would think you will need to set up an inbound rule in the router to forward the necessary ports.

So far no one has been "kicked off" for using their own router and there are plenty of people doing so.

Re: dg834gt router and VPN!

thanks for the replies chaps

i think the problem is with GRE and the sky chap confirms that their firmware does not allow this,
im looking at getting acheap router from EBAY and flashing it back to netgear firmware and going through that

did mean to say Phase 1 when i typed before...wasn't with it,lol...

as for flashing a router...bare in mind you've asked questions of Sky regarding VPN so they may well keep an eye on router you use - just a thought...
